Getting to know Libby [Character Study]
1. What all gives your character a sense or purpose in life? How effective is it? With a heart full of compassion, Libby finds purpose in improving the lives of others. Though she is soft-spoken, her actions speak volumes - working at a bookstore-cafe, she’s always there to greet people, giving them a smile, and even going as far as memorizing their drink orders. Her gentle touch and quiet dedication make a meaningful difference in her community. Though introverted, Libby's selfless service radiates warmth. Libby may not seek the spotlight, but her quiet acts of service shine bright. 2. How does your character behave when insulted? When threatened? Libby is a gentle soul with a heart of gold. Though soft-spoken and unassuming, this young woman possesses hidden depths. When insulted, Libby responds with grace. She turns the other cheek, believing that kindness is the best cure for cruelty. When threatened, however, Libby reveals her inner strength. She stands tall in the face of adversity, channeling her anxiety into courage. Though tenderhearted, Libby is no pushover. She has achieved much through perseverance and grit. Her quiet wisdom and compassion light the way for others. Libby is a testament that nice girls can finish first. 3. What job does your character want right now? Right now, Libby is living her dream job. She gets to work among shelves and shelves of books. Her favorite part of the day is opening a brand new box of orders and running her fingers over the covers, reading their descriptions, before shelving them for a future book lover to find. She even enjoys making cafe drinks for the patrons, finding the social time just right for her introverted self. 4. Which personality traits does your character have that she would like to change or lose? Anxiety, anxiety, anxiety…what Libby wouldn’t give to have that trait just poof and disappear. It has made her an overthinking, nervous, and constantly thinking of all the scenarios–good and bad. It’s truly and utterly exhausting. 5. If your character could spend the weekend anywhere, where would it be? It would come to no surprise that Libby would prefer to spend her time either in a bookstore, a library, or in the comfort of her own home with her cat, Smudge, curled up with a good book! 6. Which facts about herself does your character prefer to keep hidden? Libby prefers to keep her past just where it is…in the past. She dwells on it enough in her own mind, the last thing she needs and more wants is others to know about it and judge her for it. 7. What lie is your character most likely to tell? She would likely lie about being fine when asked how she is. She’ll say she’s doing great even if she’s a complete mess on the inside. She likes to crumble behind closed doors in her own space.
8. What actions has your character taken that she regrets or questions? Does she have any justifications for them, and if so, what? Back in high school, Libby could feel her boyfriend drifting away. In her anxiety and overthinking panic, she broke into his house in the middle of the night. While she will always say she just wanted to talk–which she did–she knows now it was a foolish and immature act on her part. She got sent to juvie for it, followed by a fun stint in therapy. 9. What does your character dislike about herself that has nothing to do with her physical appearance, or being shy, awkward, or clumsy. Libby detests her anxiety, how she feels insecure, and inadequate. She doesn’t voice this, mind you. She’s very good and keeping her issues to herself. She just drives herself a bit haggard in doing so. She could also do without the sleep paralysis that likes to strike here and there. It’s terrifying and downright exhausting. 10. How far would your character got to realize her dreams and ambitions? At what point(s) would your character draw a line? Being an INFP, Libby is a natural dreamer. It doesn’t take her much to concoct all the ideas. However, her dreams are also simple and easy to attain. She would never try and step on anyone’s toes, nor make a spectacle of herself to do so, which is where she would probably draw the line in whatever ambition she was working toward. 11. Where are your character’s grandparents? Where are her second cousins, third, and fourth cousins on both her mother and father’s side of the family? How does your character feel about them? How do they feel about your character? Libby is unfortunately without any living grandparents, so the answer to that question is in heaven. Before then, they all resided in her state of Montana. She has many cousins, that of which live all over her home state, as well as in Washington, Idaho, California, and even in Oklahoma. She’s got some half-relatives living in Canada and New York as well! Libby very much enjoys her family--some of the few people she can truly open up with and feel comfortable doing so. 12. What was your character interested in, even obsessed with as a teenager? How did your character view the world at large throughout her teen years? What did your character want out of life? How did all of this evolve and change as your character reached adulthood? Libby loved books and was obsessed with them. The one thing that she was even more obsessed with all those years ago however was people–more specifically friends and having love life. That has unfortunately changed due to her past. She’s afraid of people leaving her, and therefore finds the easy remedy to keep a very small, if at all existent, circle. Her love life has been rather dull to say the least. 13. How does your character look back on interests and viewpoints held at these points? What has your character retained from this time? What has your character discarded? What has your character come to see in a different way? A total bibliophile, Libby has never stopped loving books–if anything, she has fallen in love with them more. There she finds lives she can pretend to exist in, fall for the boys in books who can’t hurt her heart, and make friendships with characters who won’t leave her for her actions as a sad teenage girl. 14. What are a few costumes your character would consider wearing for Halloween? Why? - Luna Lovegood - Her favorite Harry Potter character, who is also a Ravenclaw and INFP.
- Elizabeth Bennett - Her favorite character from Pride & Prejudice.
- Juliet Capulet - Why not be the beautiful star crossed lover? Ever the romantic with a sad little twist.
- Belle from Beauty and the Beast - A fellow bookworm, where can she go wrong? Plus, she’s her favorite Disney princess.
