True Nightmare.

"Leon! I cleared the way to head underground through the sewers. We are free to make our way down and try to find an exit out of here!" Claire held the radio close to her lips, the eagerness and relief coating each syllable as she spoke. She released the button a moment later and patiently waited for the familiar crackle that would sound over the feed accompanied soon after by the calming voice of the man that had saved her life. Ten minutes passed as she examined the seat that Marvin laid upon. But no such sound echoed from the device. No reply of any kind came, only static and silence.

"Leon! Leon!? Do you copy?" Once again the redhead was greeted with nothing but a buzzing static and silence from her partner.

"Sh*t." She cursed softly under her breath as she lowered the device in her hand. Ocean hues staring at it as if pleading with it to answer her calls, to will him into responding and putting this terror that was clawing up her throat to rest before it turned her blood to ice and froze her in place.

Claire knew what she had to do to put this uneasiness to rest in her chest. She was going to have to traverse back into the station's dark depths. Depths crawling with those creatures that seeked nothing more than to strip flesh from bones. Depths that held mutations that could liberate her head from her shoulders if she made a wrong move. Depths that bounced the echoing sounds of heavy boots throughout the halls made by a creature that relentlessly hunted them. She had to go into the depths and find Leon. If she didn't she knew she would never put this feeling, that left a bitter taste on her tongue, to rest.

She turned on her heels and began to make her way towards the door at the front on the lefthand side. "Claire, where are you going?" Her movements paused a moment although she did not look back to where the voice had come from. Her body trembled ever so slightly as if a single breeze could send her crumbling into pieces. But she had to be strong now despite the gnawing fear. Not just for her brother, Chris, but for Leon as well. "I'll be back…as soon as I find Leon!

Claire couldn't bare to wait for a response. She couldn't bare to be told once again to only think of herself, to save herself. She had made a promise with Leon. They had sworn they would get out of that nightmarish hell hole and they would do it together. He was the one person that she refused to turn her back on and leave behind in that city of the damned. Her footsteps splashed noisily through those empty corridors echoing in a deafening manner. With each empty room she passed on the way to the watchman's office a panic was raising within her chest.

Come on Leon, where the f*** are you. She rounded the corner, ocean blues falling on the same carnage of ripped apart bodies that greeted her each time she had to walk down this corridor. Her nose scrunched slightly at the smell of decomp that had begun to hang heavy in the air as she stepped over the closet body. She gingerly pushed the door to the office open as she raised her flashlight up before stepping in. The room was dark and the shutter that had once been shut tight, separating the office from the corridor leading to the basement, now stood open.

The half of Elliott's body with a bullet in his head told her Leon had been here recently. The blood that had pooled on the floor was still tacky and wet. Claire reloaded and check her revolver to ensure it would not fail her before she took in a deep breath and headed down the corridor towards the basement. The last time she had spoken to Leon over their radios he had said he was heading to the basement. It made the most sense that he could still be in there and possibly in need of assistance. Something down there was preventing him from calling for help.

The darkness greeted her from the top of the staircase like a mouth opening with a yawn waiting to swallow her. The sickening feeling that had steadily grown in the pit of her stomach was begging her to turn around and run. Every fiber within her was screaming that something terrible had happened below the surface. Something that she would not walk away from if she proceeded. However her loyalty to the rookie officer pushed her forwards as she descended further into the depths.

The atmosphere down here was eerier than even the above ground levels. Claire's raised flashlight illuminated each separate end of the corridors as she turned to look from side to side trying to pick a direction to begin her search. Somewhere in the darkness she could hear the shuffling and the groaning song of the undead accompanied by the hissing sound those skinned freaks with the long tongues made. It seemed that Leon had put very few creatures out of their misery down here. It was a good thing that those creatures were blind and easy to sneak past. A red light illuminated above a door handle told her that the power had yet to be restored.

"Power supply room it is…" She mumbled to herself as she turned to the right and followed the painted arrows and names that lined the walls as a guide. The blockage of the corridor had forced her into the kennels where she was greeted with several dead dogs and the Lickers that had made quick meals out of the remaining corpses. Claire held her breath as she slowly wound her way past them. She was careful not to get too close to their bodies for fear of being detected. She had refused to release the breath she had been holding until the door to the kennel had clicked shut behind her.

Claire rested her back against it with a sigh as she tried to gather her composure and push forward. The corridors down here were nearly pitch black with the generator down making it hard to make anything out in them. The kennels had still maintained their power supply so she had turned off her flashlight to save battery. Though the sounds she heard coming from around the corner made her heart stop. She recognized the sickening sounds of flesh being stripped from bone. Part of her wanted to turn around. To walk back through that kennel and never look back but that other part of her forced her body to push away from the cold steel of the door.

As she rounded the corner and clicked on her light, what greeted her staring back from the end of the pool of light she had created was enough to turn her blood to ice. Any strength she had left failed her as her legs gave out beneath her. Pain flooded her body from where her knees had struck the concrete though she didn't really take any notice. Her mind had gone blank with shock and her body numb. Tears stung ocean hues as she gawked in disbelief. The creature that had stared back at her from the darkness, the creature that had abandoned its kill and begun shambling towards her was none other than the rookie cop that had saved her life.

This truly had to be a nightmare. She must have been so exhausted that she had fallen asleep somewhere safe and just hadn't realized. There was no other explanation as to how this could have happened. Claire felt a scream rising in her throat that she fought back. She gripped the revolver tightly in her hand as she lifted her arm. Hot tears pooled over and stung the cold of her cheeks as she turned her head away before squeezing the trigger. BANG. THUD. A sob escaped her lips as she pressed the back of her hand to her mouth in a feeble attempt to keep her growing grief silent.

"Leon….no….oh god…Leon I'm so sorry…" she whispered softly as she pressed a hand to his shoulder before getting to her feet. The sound of the shot had grabbed the attention of more than she was ready to deal with. She wiped her lingering tears before grabbing Leon's gun, Matilda, off his body. Then she casted his body a final glance before disappearing into the darkness of the corridor. Leon couldn't finish the mission they had set out on together but she would make sure part of his memory at least did.

Parking Garage Struggle

Auburn hair cascaded over her shoulder as she cast a glance back down the ladder she had begun to ascend. Her ribs throbbed from the fall she had taken to the floor below moments before. Her nerves were rattled from the experience she had just had fighting that creature that resembled a man in a white lab coat. Although she had told the young girl that the fight was over and they were safe she did not completely believe her own words. This town had taught her that nothing was as it seemed. Things that should stay dead,  oftentimes, did not. She had witnessed corpses get up and walk toward her with intentions to rip the flesh from her bones. She had seen horrifically mutated creatures roaming the halls of the police station. A place that had once represented order and safety was now the setting for a scene from someone's worst nightmare.

Her footsteps echoed loudly off each rung as she tried to erase the feelings of dread and anxiety that tugged at the recesses of her mind. Upon reaching the platform above, Claire looked up towards the young girl as she called for her to follow her. She had agreed to help her find her mother. It felt like it was the least she could do. She had to keep that innocent girl safe if it meant risking her life to do it. She let out a soft sigh as she bit back a grimace of pain that radiated from her ribs before she began to follow the girl up a set of stairs and into a small control room.

"It won't move." her soft voice filled the room from her place beside the machine. Claire cautiously approached the control panel where the lever sat. It was the only thing the girl could have been talking about. She took hold of it and gave a solid tug on it, it slid downwards. With a loud rumble a platform moved into place to allow them to pass out of the heat of the, what she assumed, was a boil room of some sorts. As they continued on Claire questioned the girl about her parents. The two bonded over their lack of parents. Although, Claire's parents had died when she was young. She learned the kid's name was Sherry Birkin during their idle chatter.

Claire led the two of them through the winding corridors, gun always drawn and carried at hip level. Just like how her brother had taught her. They reached a second room, it appeared to be an office or break room with a ladder that led above ground. Claire cast a glance at Sherry. "I'll go first, you climb up behind me." She instructed softly before taking the rungs in her hands and ascending them. Claire was met by the heavy iron disk of a sewer grate. She pushed with all her might until she could see what lay above. The lights of a police cruiser shone through a locked parking gate. When she deemed it safe enough to continue upward she pushed the grate out of her way and climbed up, stopping long enough to assist Sherry from the depths of the hole.

Sherry ran towards the light of the car beyond the gate. "It's closed…" Her voice trailed off as Claire approached the reader glowing red beside it. "Dammit. We need a key card." She sighed as she turned to look back at Sherry who stood next to her. Thinking quickly, Claire examined the gate for a moment. "Come on…" she turned back towards Sherry and nodded towards the gate, "Here, come help." The two girls tugged with all their might but the bars barely moved an inch. Claire let out a soft sigh "And you're sure this is the way?"

"This is how my mom took me last time."

"Sherry!?" The sound of the male voice startled the two of them as Claire got to her feet to see who was approaching. "I've been looking everywhere for you, Sherry..." Claire cast a glance at the girl. "Brave little girl to leave your house in the middle of this mess..." Claire could now make out a face from the darkness but just as quickly there was a gun now pointed at her. "On the ground, hands behind your head."

"You can't be serious…" Claire replied in disbelief. A gunshot followed by the sound of shattering glass erupted from behind her. "On the ground. Now." Immediately without hesitation Claire raised her hands above her head and got to her knees. Whoever this man was he ordered Sherry to tie Claire's hand behind her back. "Why are you doing this?" she whispered in response. He issued the order again. Sherry only stared at him which only seemed to anger him more as he approached Claire and threatened to kill her.

Immediately Sherry did as she was told as the man opened the gate. Claire began to threaten to have her brother from S.T.A.R.S deal with him for what he was doing. This earned her a kick as he grabbed the back of her head and waved the gun in her face. "What's your f***ing name!?" he hissed. "Claire!" She replied, trying to swallow her fear. He glanced up at Sherry without moving the gun "Sherry, you come with me now or say goodbye to Claire!" The girl eagerly agreed to leave with him demanding he take her to her mom which he agreed to as he got up from the ground to leave. "Don't listen to him, he's full of sh*t!" Pain exploded across her face as the metallic barrel of his gun smashed against her face. The force knocked her to her side. She could taste the metallic flavour of blood as it dripped from her lip. He had busted her lip but she barely felt it. Her vision was blurry and her ears ringed. She was stunned but as stubborn as she was she crawled herself back towards a grate and cut the zip ties from her wrists. Too little too late as the gate came crashing down in front of her. She gripped it in her hands calling after Sherry helplessly. She had enough time to grab the pendant that had come loose from Sherry's neck before the adrenaline faded from her and she lost consciousness against the closed garage gate.

Welcome to Raccoon City (AU Old Reply)

Claire's head felt heavy. Her mind was a jumbled mess, still dazed from the impact of the crash. She barely felt the rough pavement as it bit into the skin of her knees when she tumbled from the driver side door. She had seen the fire and smelled the gas. It had been the entire reason she had begun crawling away from the vehicle.

Upon hearing her name being frantically called her cerulean hues shot up to find the source. She squinted as she scanned the blazing flames until they fell on a tall figure. Leon was calling for her, his body rushing towards her, but it was as if time had begun to slow down to a crawl. Everything happened in a moment but felt to her as if it were all slow motion. Why did he look so panicked? Claire turned to cast a glance over her shoulder. Her eyes widened in alarm. The fear was plastered all over her face as she turned her head to look back towards him.

"Leon!" she shrieked seconds before a loud explosion erupted behind her.

Claire felt a blast wave of kinetic energy force her small frame forward. She gritted her teeth in pain as her legs were dragged over the rough surface of the road. She could feel as the broken glass just on top embedded itself into the flesh. She escaped any serious damage by keeping her body as close to the ground as she could manage until her frame came to a halt a few feet from where she had been. She laid there, her body throbbed in pain, as she silently wondered if Leon had survived the explosion.

The sound of his voice calling her moments later answered her question. She felt a wave of relief wash over her as she forced her battered body to sit on her knees once again. There was blood dripping from cuts her arms had received down them from shrapnel. She scanned the area for Leon, upon spotting him she scrambled towards him. "Are you okay?" she breathed as she accepted the assistance to her feet. She was thankful to see he was still alive despite what had just happened.

Claire examined the area they were in, a chill running down her spine as the undead began to rise up around them out of the flames. It was like they had fallen into the depths of hell. It seemed even an explosion had been unable to slow the creatures down. Claire reached for the revolver on her hip, forcing her fingers to stop trembling. She pushed away the tremendous pain and fear she felt as she turned cerulean hues and nodded.

"I'll cover you! While you find us a safe way through to the station!" her eyes reflected determination as she followed behind him. Claire's eyes fell on the alleyway across from them. It was their only option. Claire pointed her revolver and fired off a few shots to slow the shambling things, that were alight with flames, down enough to buy Leon time to get to the otherside to scope it out.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Three more shots rang out along with the sickening squelching sound of one of the creature's heads exploding. It took a few steps closer before falling to the ground motionless. Claire cast her eyes towards Leon as he called for her to follow him with a wave of his hand. She purposely kept her back towards him as she warded off what she could from following them. She quickly pivoted on her heels and sprinted down the alleyway with him.

Claire came to a halt next to him on the other side of the alley. Her cerulean hues scanned the crowded street with a glum smile. They could clearly see the open gates of the R.P.D on the other side but the jungle of mangled metal would be hard to navigate. A guttural groan told her that more of those things were here as well. She sighed soft as she quickly reloaded her gun and gave Leon a small nod. That determination from before reflected in them once more.

Adrenaline coursed through her veins as she took off after Leon. She dodged one creature as it lunged at her, slamming her boot into the top of its head, crushing it like a ripe tomato beneath her boot. Leon had navigated past the two eating in front of the gates. This had alerted them to their presence. She slammed the side of her boot into the one's head as if kicking a soccer ball. It fell backwards and gave her the time she needed to slip past Leon into the courtyard of the police station.

The metallic sound of the gates locking behind them caused the breath Claire had been holding to exhale and with it all her energy from before. Her body felt weak as she held her aching ribs. "We did, by the skin of our teeth," she offered a small smile to Leon, "Let's see if there are any survivors that can tell us just what the hell is going on here."

She took a few shaky steps towards the large wooden doors. Her slender hand gripped the handle before shoved her hip against the heavy oak doors. They creaked open ominously, drowning out the sounds of the thundering rain and distant moans as they entered what would prove to be the belly of the beast.

Welcome to Raccoon City (AU Starter)

Claire had been surprised to learn that her savior was a cop just like her own brother was. Before long she had given him her name and explained that she had come to look for her brother who was missing. She merely smiled at his words. She, too, was glad that they had run into each other. It made that nightmare they just faced a little less horrible. As she stared out the window counting raindrops that splattered against the passenger side window she finally felt her body begin to relax again. She found herself hoping that was the only nightmare they had to face and if there were to be more, she hoped they could face it together. Neither of them would be prepared for what lay ahead for them.

As the cruiser they were in began to pull into the city limits, winding its way down the darkened streets, Claire could see just how wrong she had been. Abandoned vehicles littered the streets like the worst case of rush hour traffic. It looked as though countless people had tried to flee the city as quickly as possible and yet failed. Various windows of shops were shattered, likely looted for those that dared to make a break for supplies before hunkering down somewhere. Buying time for whatever that happened to blow over. There were cars that had even hit power poles or buildings. Several fires burned all over the city as if riots had ensued.

Over the local radio station that played on the cruiser's radio an emergency broadcast could be heard repeating: "Attention all citizens: Due to the citywide outbreak, you are advised to take shelter at the Raccoon City police station. Free food and medical supplies will be provided to everyone in need."

"Oh my god, this is so unreal…" Claire let out a soft sigh as she stared out the window at the carnage that was left in the wake of a once bustling city. Claire could hear Leon mentioning that the station wasn't much further. Though she honestly wasn't paying much attention. She was lost in thoughts about the citizens who lived there. If there was anyone left alive. If she would find her brother. "Yeah but…" she mumbled, voicing her own dark thoughts that had been plaguing her, "what if we're the only ones? What if there's no survivors–"

Claire fell silent at his insistence of there being survivors. Her cerulean eyes examined him intently for a moment before she turned away. Perhaps he was right. She really shouldn't think such negative thoughts at least not before they had a chance to search. The cruiser pulled forward a few feet more before the headlights illuminated a barrier that stood in their way. It stretched the length of the road. Overturned and abandoned cars blocked the otherside.

Claire peered out her window at a collection of those nightmare inducing creatures ripping chunks of flesh off a fresh corpse. One creature slowly turned its attention towards their vehicle. "More like running." She stated simply to his comment about walking the rest of the way.

"Jesus Christ!" She exclaimed in surprise as the cruiser began to shake violently. A loud thud ran out as one of the creatures slammed their bodies against Leon's window. Claire snapped her head in the direction of a second slamming that came from her own window. She felt that lump of fear rising up in her throat once more, threatening to have a stranglehold on her. More of the undead began to shake their vehicle as she begged him to back the cruiser up in a frantic panic.

A bright light began to illuminate their faces from behind them. Both turned to see headlights barreling at them from a semi truck showing no signs of slowing down. "What the…" Claire whispered it was as if everything today was trying to kill them and it brought a deep rooted horror to her.

Claire began to throw herself against the side of her door at Leon's behest but the force of the undead bodies against her door made it impossible for her to open it. Panic raised in her chest as she yelled out "I can't!" There was no time now. She braced herself for impact, placing her hands against the dashboard just before the semi plowed into the rear end of their cruiser sending it flying through the barrier and into the rear end of a white car in front of them.

Claire cried out in pain. She felt dizzy as she tried the door on her side. The metal had bent over it, preventing it from opening. She glanced over towards Leon to find that he had already stumbled out of the driver side. Claire clicked the seatbelt from her chest and began to drag her small frame over the center console and towards his open door. Ceruleans widened in stunned surprise as the gas that had apparently started leaking after the accident lit up. Panic set in as she scrambled to free herself from the cruiser, toppling onto the wet pavement with a splat before dragging herself away from the flames.

Gas Station of Nightmares

A smile was on her lips as she hung up that payphone. Despite the rain that had begun to fall Claire felt optimistic. She had left her shared campus apartment, even skipping graduation night, to travel one entire state over on the back of her Harley Davidson motorcycle in search of her older brother. It had been two months since she had last heard anything from him. Desperate with worry she had left as soon as she had been able with the agreement that she would call her roommate when she was close to town. It had been her roommate who she had been speaking to. She gave her head a small shake. "Why does everyone think I'm going to get into trouble?" she asked aloud as she exited the booth into the parking lot of the gas station.

The darkened station had appeared to be abandoned when she had arrived, save for a lone police cruiser that had been parked near the front of the convenience store. It's headlights illuminated the front of the store. This had not particularly striked Claire as odd, she assumed they had come on a routine call. Though a sudden loud crash and the sound of shattering glass from within the building gained her attention. "What was that?" she wondered as she turned her attention towards the desolate looking building eager to help if she could. "Hello?" she called out hesitantly into the darkness of the rain soaked night before swallowing her fear and approaching the building.

Her boots splashed through puddles as she approached the door. It was unlocked but the store beyond was shrouded in darkness. She firmly gripped the smooth metal of the door handle and slowly pushed the door open. "Hello?" she called into the silent storefront. "Is anybody here…?" It did appear to be empty save for the police issue flashlight that lay on the floor just beyond the door. But she had been sure she had heard something. "Hello…?" she tried again as she bent down to retrieve the flashlight. As the light flooded the floor before her a soft gasp escaped her lips as pools of blood illuminated beneath it. Someone really was here and they were injured. She knew she had to help.

Claire swallowed hard as she tried to control the wild thundering of her heart in her ears. She slowly followed the trail of blood towards the back room. As she rounded the corner of the last aisle she found the store manager sitting near the back store room. He was holding a wound on his neck that was dripping blood down his arm creating the splatters on the floor around him. "Oh my god! Are you okay!?" her voice echoed out in a shrill manner as the man lifted his free hand and pointed towards the door. She glanced at it, "Stay here! I'll check it out!" She instructed before heading into whatever awaited her beyond the store room.

She made sure to walk as cautiously as she could through the backroom's corridor so as to not make a sound. As she neared a door that was left ajar at the very back she was able to make out the terrible sounds of grunting as if a fight were taking place just behind it. She reached a hand out and pushed the door open to reveal a police officer fighting with a seemingly crazed patron. "Excuse me, is everything okay…?" The officer was quick to pin the crazed man by the throat and turn to address Claire "Ma'am please stay back…" he hadn't even finished speaking when the crazed attacker overpowered him. He forced the officer to the ground before the sickening sound of flesh being torn from his throat could be heard. "Oh my god!" Claire cried out in alarm. "Get off him! I said, GET OFF HIM!"

When the creature had finished tearing the officer's throat out it turned dead white eyes towards her. It's skin was pale and blue in colour as if it had lost copious amounts of blood and yes was still standing. A scent that reminded her of something rotting could be smelled in waves off of it. "Stay back! Don't you come any closer!" She ordered the creature, raising the gun she carried on her for protection at the insistence of her brother. She took aim and fired a few shots knocking the creature to the floor. She quickly tried the door that led to the front and realized it was locked. She cautiously skirted past the creature to the back desk where the key was. The creature was just stumbling to its feet as she slammed the door shut behind her.

The false sense of security she had quickly faded as another of those creatures knocked over one of the shelving displays. Claire took off running down the adjacent aisle. She was forced to dodge and weave through a few of the creatures, sliding under a second display as one of the clumsy things knocked it over. She made a beeline for the front door only to be met by a young man holding a gun. She raised her hands above her head. "Whoa, don't shoot!" She exclaimed a moment before obeying his command to get down. The sound of a shot went off. She glanced at the fallen creature behind her, "We gotta get out of here!" she quickly darted outside behind the man that had just saved her life.

Claire softly assured him that she was alright and thanked him, though he told her to thank him when they were safe she quickly saw why. The once empty lot was now teaming with a hoard of those horrible creatures. Likely drawn in by the sounds of their gunfire earlier. "Holy sh*t!" she exclaimed as she raised her gun once more. She heard him yell out to get to the cruiser. She nodded and ran towards the open passenger door, shoving a creature down in the process. Once safely in the vehicle the cruiser lurked forward and peeled away from the nightmare behind them.
