knowledge is king,

questions,
ft. loch ness, gingersnap, madamn bones, unbreakable, solus, dragon seeker, kestrel's beater, paris-brest, confection queen, panic switch.

What was your character’s childhood like? (requested: loch ness)

Sally-Anne grew up in a warm, loving household with two parents and two older brothers. She wanted for nothing, but she never really asked for anything either. Until Hogwarts became known to the Perks siblings their life was the same. Lazy days full of reading, childish pranks and lazing about in the sun. The only complaint she could think of is the drastic change in weather between Texas and York.

What is your character’s hobby? (requested: gingersnap)

The badger has always been in a whiz in the kitchen, whether that be cooking or baking. She would never want to be classed as a housewife, would never accept being a stay at home mother but Charlotte Perks had made sure her children knew how to take care of themselves when it came to home economics. Sally-Anne could fix a leaky pipe, build a bookcase and cook-up a mean Sunday roast – all in the muggle way. Unlike her brother’s however Sally-Anne did quickly pick up a love for concoctions in the kitchen. She still doesn’t understand how she can fail so badly at potions but yet can follow a tart recipe with no issues.

What is something your character is reluctant for other’s to know? (requested: madamn bones)

During her early teen years, when Sally-Anne judged people based solely on personality rather than house, the young blonde had quite a crush on Theodore Nott. He didn’t seem to be as much of a purist as the ferret, he wasn’t a giant ass like her ex-boyfriend, Zach, and from what she knew of him he was fairly intelligent. Not to mention he was easy on the eyes. Nothing ever came of it and after her father was murdered, she locked her feelings for the blue-eyed snake away behind a locked door that would never be opened again.

What does your character find comfort in? (requested: unbreakable)

It all does depend on the situation. Comfort from a break-up? She’d probably say a girly night with Arya, Chinese takeaway, and a bottle of rum. A simple irritating day at work? Just a smile from her two boys can make all the difference and the three of them will spend the evening creating blanket and pillow forts the muggle way, reminiscent of her childhood with Samuel and Sebastian. But dark memories? Jackson’s conception? Her father’s death? In this case you’ll probably find her swallowing down a bottle of tequila in the company of her favourite brother. Sebastian knows when to cut her off before she throws up but still lets her drink until she’s numb at which point they’ll return to his home rather than hers (Jax and Alex being cared for by their mother) and the two Perks would curl around each other as they did when they were children. Except for the rare occasion Sally-Anne would always find comfort in her brother.

A memory from your character’s career. (requested: solus)

Sally-Anne rarely celebrated her birthday after the death of her father, the date being so close. After graduation she wasn’t even sure anyone knew what date it was but over a decade after she became a Professor, the blonde returned to Hogwarts after winter break to find her quarters decked out with streamers and balloons, gifts placed precariously on her bed and a card the size of her balanced against it. She wasn’t shocked when she found out that some of her sixth year students had managed to bribe Neville to get the date (he did love those rare plants after all), but she had been shocked that they’d done something about it.

A memory that your character cherishes. (requested: dragon seeker)

The birth of her second child. Though she loved Jackson more than life itself, the circumstances surrounding his conception meant that she had struggled greatly during her first pregnancy and subsequent birth. Where her mother had been as supportive as she could be, her brother and best friend had been filled with rage and confusion. With Alexander it was different, though still not in a loving and committed relationship like those who cared for her had hoped, the Professor was on genuinely good terms with the father of her second child, the two still meeting for drinks regularly years after. Though the public would not know the truth of his parentage until the boy and his father agreed to reveal it, both parents were ecstatic at the news and the Slytherin alum had made sure to be there throughout the badger’s pregnancy. There had never been a better moment than when Sally-Anne was laid up in St Mungo’s gazing down at her little boy, his father staring at them both with such fondness that she thought she might cry. They didn’t love each other the way they should. They were an unconventional family, but they were a family, nonetheless.

A memory that your character wishes to erase. (requested: solus)

There are many memories of her past which she despises but most of them contributed to her becoming the person she was today. Most would believe that she’d choose the death of her father, the death’s she had caused during the battle of Hogwarts or the assault that she was forced to go through as an adolescent. But the memory that she actually hates to remember is the simple breaking of a friendship. Sally-Anne had gained nothing from the temporary ‘end’ of her sisterhood with Arya other than pain and tears. It hadn’t helped her grow, she hadn’t changed. Their friendship eventually sown back together, the tears in the hearts mended yet never fully healed because though they were friends again they were no longer sisters. They no longer lived together; Sally-Anne would no longer turn to Arya first. So that is what she’d erase, the time which she despised her best friend because nothing was ever the same after that.

Something that makes your character angry? (requested: kestrels beater)

Something or someone? Unlike her brother Sally-Anne is not actually quick to anger, there are things about people that irritate her to high heaven but they don’t necessarily make her angry. And then there’s Zach. Her ex, her ‘friend’, her co-captain. A guy who infuriates her more than anyone else in her life ever has and it’s not specifically the womanising, pig-like, arsehole behaviour that aggravates her. It’s the fact that, unlike most, she remembers who he used to be. Before girls and ego got it in the way. And that’s what angers her, because Zach used to be someone she was proud to class as a friend, somehow along the way he lost himself, and she doesn’t even know who he is anymore.

Something that makes your character laugh? (requested: paris-brest)

Honestly, Sally-Anne can’t not laugh whenever a guy decides it’s his prerogative to ask out Arya when the blonde is around. The words won’t even be fully out of the gents mouth before she’s having to hold back giggles and tears of laughter. The look of sheer rage and aggravation that appears on the redhead’s face every single god damn time just makes her day. Her roommate hides it quickly enough before concocting the most ridiculous excuses, a different one every time. ‘Are you seriously asking me out while my pregnant girlfriend is next to me? Show some tact man.’ … ‘You see that decrepit old guy over there, yeah, he’s my sugar daddy. I don’t go for anyone under the age of 57.’… ‘Honestly I would, dear god I would, but a penis that small probably couldn’t handle me.’ Each comment followed by a sharp smile, a cheerful wave and Arya dragging Sally-Anne away, the blonde’s raucous laughter echoing behind them.

Describe your character’s parents. (requested: confection queen)

Matthew Perks – Sally-Anne had always been closer to her father than her mother. Don’t get her wrong she loved both her parents but as his little girl Matthew spoiled her rotten and tried as hard as he could to protect her from the world. As a well-respected official in the government and the heir to his families money Matthew didn’t want for money. The Perks family would never be classed as poor. He was a caring and devoted father, who adored all of his children, never once strayed, and loved his wife with all his heart. It wasn’t until his death just before she turned seventeen that Sally-Anne wondered if everything she’d ever known about him was a lie.

Charlotte Perks – Before becoming a stay-at-home mum to care for her three children, Charlotte had been a kindergarten teacher not far from the Perks family home in Texas. English herself, Charlotte took to American customs like a duck to water and fell for her future husband almost instantly. While Matthew worked Charlotte stayed home, assisting the children with their homework, teaching them how to bake and provide for themselves in the future. Charlotte eventually went back to caring for children after Sally-Anne began Hogwarts, becoming a child-minder for local families when they needed it. The loss of her husband hit her hard, but she stayed strong for her children and eventually her grandchildren.

Describe your character’s former lover. (requested: panic switch)

Which one? Her childhood relationship with Zacharias Smith that eventually culminated in a sloppy and awkward loss of virginity? Her short lived fling full of nothing but hate-sex with Nathaniel Avery? Or the Slytherin that she found herself in bed with multiple times over the years because he sure as hell knows what he’s doing. Said Slytherin who accidentally knocked her up? Either way Sally-Anne kind of has the worst luck when it comes to relationship.

Describe your character’s worst enemy. (requested: solus)

Do people actually have these? Obviously, she kind of hates Malfoy until he grows out of being the prejudice jockstrap that he is. And she despises Antonin Dolohov for the murder of her father, but she hasn’t particularly thought about a nemesis/enemy. Having someone hold that much power over her takes up too much time and emotion that she just does not have to give.

What your character is like at social events. (requested: solus)

t is actually rare that you’ll find Sally-Anne at a social function, choosing to spend her time at home with her children, marking student’s work or curled up with a good book. But when Arya inevitably manages to drag her to said boring function the short, even in heels, blonde is charming and sociable managing to make up or her friend’s sharp, brash personality. Sally-Anne can be deceptively sweet and innocent when she wants to be.

friendships,

Headcanons,
ft. gingersnap, unbreakable, panic switch, one ear wonder, paris brest, camera boy.

ginevra weasley: broomsticks – the truth of the matter is, there’s no-one she knows that is more caring than the youngest Weasley. Behind the tough, sarcastic exterior is a flower waiting to blossom and no-one was more surprised than the youngest perks when the redhead decided to reveal that side of herself to the older blonde. A friendship grown through a mutual love of quidditch and dreams of taking the game pro, the Hufflepuff didn’t expect the Gryffindor to become so important to her. To most people the two seemed to be nothing but acquaintances, the occasional argument over which team was better, The Harpies (ginny) or The Wasps (sally). And at the time that’s all it was, two quidditch obsessed teens with nothing but broomstick’s and being the baby of the family in common. Until the D.A, until the battle, until the blonde’s dreams crashed and burned with the remnants of the castle. When Sally-Anne’s dreams of flying professionally came to a swift end it was Ginny who showed up. She visited every week while the blonde was laid up in bed, bringing quidditch magazines galore, news of Hogwarts rebuild, gossip of the blooming relationships that were taking place outside of St Mungo’s. And it was Ginny that forced her back on her beloved Comet once she was finally able to leave. She may not have been able to fly for a living, but the broomstick still brought her a sense of peace, a feeling that from then on could only be brought about by one other part of her life: Ginny Weasley.

sebastian perks: tears – sally-anne wasn’t known to cry. As a matter of fact none of the Perks family were really known for their tears, normally seen as a happy or stubborn (the two youngest) bunch, tears were a rarity in their lives. At least for the first sixteen years of the youngest ones life. That all changed with the death of their patriarch. Sally-Anne became a ball of blubbering, following in the footsteps of her mother. As strong as Samuel tried to be, it just couldn’t add up. The eldest Perks child had always been a miniature version of his father, attempting to follow in his footsteps at every turn. The tears of the oldest, though rarer than the youngest were not few and far between. And here is where the middle child differed. More rebellious than his brother and darker than his sister, Sebastian was always seen as the enigma of the Perks family. He wasn’t a prodigy like Sally-Anne, he wasn’t as intellectually determined as Samuel. But everything that made Sebastian who he was, made him Sally-Anne’s favourite. He was the protector, the dark avenger, the stoic rebel who refused to shed a tear. At least in front of everyone else. It was Sally-Anne who comforted him It was Sally-Anne who would climb into his bed, like she did when she was little, wrap her skinny arms around him like a cocoon and just let him sob into her shoulder. Sebastian was her blanket; she was his pillow.

nathaniel avery: apology – she’s not quite sure how the relationship between the Slytherin and herself escalated to such violence. She was stubborn and sarcastic, and he was… well, he was stubborn and sarcastic too. Not as much as her though of course. She didn’t hate him; hate was a word she saved purely for Malfoy and Dolohov. She abhorred wasting her energy on hating and despising people. And yet either because she didn’t spend enough time with him, or because she didn’t care to look she just couldn’t find a redeeming quality in him. The thing was, most of the time her interactions with Nate turned out to be the highlight of the day, until they both ended up in detention for starting a magical brawl in the corridor. Without knowing it he pushed her to be better. So she didn’t hate him – nowhere near, but she couldn’t say she liked him. There are no apologies when it comes to the two of them and she can honestly say she would rather spend five hours fighting with Nathaniel Avery than five seconds in the company of Draco Malfoy. She loved to fight with him, even if it landed them in the hospital wing. They never apologised, not once but there was this unspoken agreement between the two at the end of each fight, they’d have peace for a week before it all happened all over again.

george weasley: laugh – maybe assisting the Weasley twins in one of their pranks wasn’t the best idea, but you can bet Sally-Anne didn’t regret it one bit. Hidden behind a mask of bubbly innocence was a master manipulator and the opportunity to work with the jokers of Gryffindor was something she couldn’t pass up. The world needed laughs and the Weasley twins made her laugh more than anyone she’d ever met. Strangely she found George funnier than Fred (yes she could tell them apart, and no she would never reveal how to either of them), but it made sense when she realised that George wasn’t as sadistic as his louder twin. Calmer than his brother and yet just as intelligent, George reminded her of her own oldest brother – fiercely protective of their families Samuel and George had a lot in common. It was quite common for Sally-Anne to be caught cheering for the Weasley Twin during a quidditch match (unless they were against Hufflepuff of course), and if you paid enough attention you could usually see her flyaway blonde curls disappearing around corners wherever a prank was taking place. She was always around and eventually people realised it was a better idea to steer clear of any food she offered as well, more often than not it was one of the twin’s concoctions. After all, they liked a good laugh.

arya mildred: death – death is inevitable. It is a known fact that eventually everyone dies, no matter how much you love them or how much you try to prevent it. The Flamel’s were proof that no matter how you prolong it death will inevitably catch up with you. Sally-Anne knew death, she’d lost her father to him and had almost succumbed to him herself during the battle. The problem with death is that she had gone through so much pain in her life that she was sure she couldn’t lose anyone else without breaking. So she’d made herself a promise that she wouldn’t have to. She would never lose anyone else. She refused. She would rather die herself than lose one more person. She knew her brothers were in the thick of it, as an auror Sebastian faced death on a daily basis, Samuel had to be extremely careful every day to protect himself from the dark curses he came across. If she lost them she would feel it. But if Sally-Anne lost Arya she didn’t know what she would do. So when she was nineteen she made a promise to herself that she would die first because she refused to watch Arya die, she refused to live without her sister. Death was inevitable, everybody died. But she didn’t have to be there to see it.

colin creevey: happiness – though not as close friends with the Gryffindor as she was with others, Sally-Anne could say with certainty that Colin was in fact one of her favourite people. One of the sweetest and kindest people she had ever met, Colin was a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stifling world. She never minded his constant presence or his bright demeanour, she smiled brightly every time she heard the click of his camera and accepted it graciously when she was the object of his lens’ focus because the young wizard was always happiest when snapping pictures. She never posed for him, knowing he preferred to capture the reality of the moment but in every picture he’d taken that she was in there was always a smile on her face, because whenever he was around she herself was happy. He always seemed to be happiest when that camera was in front of his face and that fact made her happy for him. She never seemed to be happier than when that camera was around, whether she was lounging by the lake with Ginny, strolling down the lane to Hogsmeade with Lisa and Susan or being carried around the castle on Sebastian’s back. Colin and his camera always seemed to be around, capturing everyone’s happiness on film. After the battle Sally-Anne bought a retro camera of her own, making sure to take a picture of at least one happy moment a day in remembrance of the bright teen that they all cared for.

Prompt 2 - Don't look down.

Prompt - "Don't look down."

The blonde looked out across the grounds. From this height she could see everything, even the flutter of startled birds as they flew out of the forest. She assumed the thestrals were racing again, they were one of the only creatures that scared those irritating birds.

Smiling softly, she leant against the arch that surrounded her. It was such a peaceful day, she always loved the days when she only had two classes. Especially when those two classes were Charms and Transfiguration, the subjects that had been her favourite since day one all those many years ago. Turning her head slightly to the left, her eyes landed on the floating mug beside her. It really had been a neat spell to learn in her first year.

Grabbing the steaming mug of hot cocoa out of mid-air she took a sip before holding it gently in her lap, the heat from the liquid warming up her hands.

She had never felt so at peace, her legs dangling over the side of the tower, a blanket draped across her lithe shoulders and a huge cup of gingerbread hot chocolate in her hands. This really was the life.

She jerked backwards as a pair of hands squeezed at her hips, a sharp squeal leaving her mouth and the mug falling past window after window as it crashed to the floor miles below her.

"Don't look down."

Sally-Anne held a hand to her heart as she fought to get her breath back, while a pair of long, gangly legs joined hers over the edge. She frowned as she looked up into the smirking face of her fellow badger.

"Smith! You absolute arsehole!"

"Scared you?"

Reaching her hand out she whacked her hand against his shoulder. "That's beside the point doucheface, you ruined a perfectly good cup of hot chocolate!" She almost screeched in anger as she indicated to the now shattered cup below them.

A slight look of guilt crossed his face before the constant arrogant smirk reappeared as her shrugged her shoulders almost imperceptibly. "My bad, Perks."

Reverting back into her previous position, she relaxed once again into the corner of the arch, a slight pout marring her otherwise perfect features. "Why do I put up with you again?"

"Because I'm good-looking."

"Narcissistic."

"Intelligent."

"Arrogant"

"A descendant of our wonderful founder."

"Boastful,"

"And if you remember I saved your life last year during that Quidditch match."

Raising an eyebrow at the taller Hufflepuff, she sighed softly. "I saved your life idiot, kind of in the job description of beater. I save you from those blasted bludgers."

"Oh, yeah. Right." He looked perplexed for a moment before turning to face her. "Well then, I don't know."

Smiling gently at the frown on his face, she shuffled slightly to the left before leaning her head on his shoulder. "Don't worry about it Smith. You're actually quite good company."

"Awes..."

"When you're not talking."

Prompt 1 - Sssh, they'll hear us.

Prompt - "Sssh, they'll hear us."

"You know something? Your neighbours are complete d*ckheads."

The blonde looked up from the research that she had been staring at for the past three hours to face the redhead that had barged in through her door. It had only been two weeks since she had offered to let the Slytherin alum stay with her until she could find her own place and, as far as Sally-Anne knew, she had already had three shouting matches with the newly-weds that lived next door.

"Seriously Mil?! I've lived next to them for three months now and have never had an issue. You've been here two weeks and it's like the war never ended."

Peering back down at the documents she had spread out on the table in front of her, she let out a sigh of frustration before shoving them away from her. At first, she had been excited about finding a cure for the after effects of the cruciatus curse. Now?

Now she was just tired.

Rising from the couch she made her way to the kitchen, her new housemate following at her heels. "Yes, but you're a sweet little Hufflepuff who gets on with anyone and everyone."

Grabbing two mugs from the rack she flicked on the kettle to make them both steaming cups of tea. "And you're a bitchy Slytherin who hates the world." She raised an eyebrow at the smile that crossed Arya's soft features. She was a strange girl. "But does that really mean you need to start an argument with everyone you come across."

The redhead crossed her arms as she pulled herself up to sit on the counter. "What makes you think I started it?"

The blonde former Hufflepuff spun around to stare wide-eyed at her companion, she may not have known Arya at Hogwarts and she may not have known her for that long, but she knew her well enough. "Because you always do?"

Arya sighed in defeat, as Sally-Anne pottered around the room pouring different liquids into the mugs. "That may be true, but I swear this time was not my fault."

Sally-Anne shook her head as she placed the finished product into the Slytherin's hand, before making her way back to the couch and continuing with the task she had assigned herself that morning. Find out why certain people were affected in certain ways. "Alright, then tell me what happened."

She watched out of the corner of her eye as Arya perched on the age of the seat she had commandeered the day she had moved in. It was a good job it wasn't Sally-Anne's favourite chair.

"Okay, so I was walking up the stairs when this white streak just flew past me and sent me tumbling backwards down two flights."

"So, you were attacked by Mrs Whiskerson?"

"MRS WHISKERSON?! WHO THE BLOODY HELL NAMES THEIR CAT MRS WHISKERSON?!"

"Sssh, they'll hear us."

"Who cares? Their bloody cat, with the stupid ass name, ATTACKED ME! And did they apologise? Did they balls." She leant back in her seat and took a sip of tea. "Bloody inconsiderate muggles."

Sally-Anne rubbed at her temples with the tips of her fingers. She could feel a migraine coming on. "You do realise I still have to live next to these people after you leave, right?"

The redhead looked at her in thought for a moment, before nodding as if an idea had suddenly popped into her head.

"Then you should probably just move."

01/05/2018 06:56 PM

happy birthday,

"Professor Perks?"

Sally-Anne lifted her head from where it had previously been placed on her desk, an eyebrow raised in curiosity. Most of the students in the school would have heeded the warning that had been stuck to the outside of her classroom door. It was common knowledge that if the current Charms teacher was in a bad mood it was in everyone's best interests to avoid. Sometimes the population of Hogwarts was more scared of her than they were of their feared Headmistress.

She had never wanted to be that scary teacher but that was who she had become. Not all of the time, but it had occurred so often that it was now common knowledge to avoid her. Shaking her head out of her reverie, she furrowed her brow slightly, her eyes squinting at the young student in front of her.

"Miss Thomas?"

The short brunette, who's father she had once attended this very school with stepped closer to the desk. Sally-Anne could sense the trepidation. When had she become the scary one? When had she taken over McGonagall's reign of terror? When had the children become so scared of her that they couldn't even ask her a simple question?

"Thomas, I do not have all day. Spit it out."

The young Gryffindor jumped slightly before placing a wrapped box precariously on her teacher's desk in a rushed motion. The blonde professor stared down at the present in front of her, a look of confusion spreading across her face. She didn't think it was normal for students to be bringing their professors' presents. Especially when it was a student who didn't need to grovel. Dean's daughter was one of the students' she had never had to worry about. She wasn't the smartest student, but she was definitely up there trying to battle with Granger's offspring. She wasn't a goody-two-shoes, but she didn't misbehave badly enough that detention was recorded. Basically, she skated on through meaning Sally-Anne didn't really need to give as much time for her as some other students.

"What..."

"I just... I heard it was your birthday the other day. And we only just got back this morning, so I could only give you this now."

Sally-Anne swallowed down the shock that had spread over her body and opened her mouth to reply but her bubbly student began to talk once again. "My dad says that your birthday is always hard for you and I just thought everybody should at least have one good thing for their birthday."

"Urm, well then. Thank you, Thomas."

The brunette nodded and turned on her heel, walking out of the classroom at a brisk pace. "See you in class on Tuesday, Professor."

The blonde watched as her student departed, the present staring at her from its place on the desk. She didn't think she'd ever been given a gift by a student. As far as she could remember the only people left at Hogwarts who knew her birthday was Minerva and Neville.

Removing the box carefully from the desk she placed it gently in the bottom drawer. It was a sweet gesture, but she just couldn't open it right now.

Maybe tomorrow.

Or the day after.

winter wonderland,

The young blonde sighed as she watched the merriment that took place around her. Resting her elbow on the table in front of her, her face rested on the palm of her hand she used her other hand to gently stir her drink. This was the second ball she had been to at Hogwarts, and she was having about as much fun as she was the first time.

She had made the mistake of suggesting to Megan and Susan that morning that she should just skip it and had ended up spending the day being forced into dress after dress by two of the three women she called her best friends. Though at the moment she couldn't for the life of her think of a reason why she actually liked them. She may have normally been the bubbly, optimistic, charming Texan but when it came to dances she would rather just curl up in a ball under her duvet and forget about it.

As graceful as Sally-Anne was on a broom, she was the exact opposite on the ground. Most of the time just walking was a problem for her. Why Susan thought dancing was a good idea she would never know. Her father had spent the better half of her childhood trying to teach her how to dance. Unlike her older brother she had not inherited Matthew Perks skills when it came to ballroom dancing and grace. It had never bothered her much, she didn't really expect to need dancing skills in her future and now here she was surrounded by most of her school, dressed in elegant robes, avoiding the dance floor.

Though she had to admit to herself, as she pushed a stray curl away from her eyes, Megan had made her look incredible compared to how she normally looked. On a normal day she would literally just lounge about in a pair of tight jeans and one of her brother's sweatshirts, with her hair pulled up into a high ponytail. But now? Her long hair reached the middle of her back and was gently curled so that flowed softly around her face. And the dress Susan had decided on though normally not her colour actually worked with her skin tone and gave her curves she never even knew she had.

How she had ended up in a huge yellow dress she would never know, if she had been able to choose her favourite dress she would be wearing the sparkly black dress she had received for Christmas the year before. Instead she looked like a bloody gold cupcake.

"You know this really isn't as bad as your making it out to be."

Tilting her head sideways she smiled softly at her cousin. Katie and herself had grown particularly close over the last year, she didn't know what she would do when the older Gryffindor graduated at the end of this year.

"Yeah, well you can physically dance without breaking someone's foot."

The Gryffindor laughed as she pulled the blonde up from the seat she had been occupying for the past hour. "It's not all about dancing sweetie, it's just about having fun."

Grumbling under her breath she followed her cousin without much choice. She could break the wrist that was grabbing her, but it was kind of pointless when she could just fix it with a simple spell. Passing the Turpin sisters', she pulled a pleading face to Lisa with no avail and continued to be dragged towards the crowd of dancing people.

"I hate you."

"Oh dear, cousin. You love me. I couldn't bring my boyfriend to this, so instead you're going to be my date, and you're gonna suck it up. Deal with it."

Raising an eyebrow at the older woman, she mused on the options she had. None of which were particularly appealing to her, and with a sigh of defeat gave in. "Fine. But I'm not happy about this."

They hadn't been dancing long when they heard the commotion. Swivelling her head to look behind her, she stopped in her tracks and pulled her cousin to a stop beside her.

"Seriously Sal, I love this song."

"Seriously Kat, pay attention to your surroundings." Storming away from her cousin, she made her way through the slowly growing crowd towards the front. When she finally reached the front, she took in the scene that had overloaded her vision and pursed her lips.

She had never been one to discriminate against anyone, but since her father's dead she had started to hate most Slytherins. No more giving them the benefit of the doubt. Pushing away from the crowd she collapsed down next to the young fourth year that was slowly losing consciousness. Her father's death had done one good thing for her. It had given her an enemy and a goal. She had chosen to fight for those that couldn't necessarily fight for themselves. At least until this war was over.

Looking up into the cold eyes of the Slytherin in front of her, she frowned. "You people make me sick." Indicating for two Gryffindor's near her to help. She lifted the young child off of the floor and began to carry her to see Madam Pomfrey.

It was starting now, she was pretty sure it was just going to get worse. At least she had chosen a side.

Subtle Changes

"Can you believe it?"

Twisting her head to the left, she looked over at the ridiculously excited voice that had appeared next to her. The young blonde smiled widely as she took in the sight of the tall, slender brunette that she had known for an entire decade.  The brunette that had taken her under her wing when she emigrated from Texas at the tender age of eight. The brunette that she had become close friends with and had managed to stay friends with throughout their entire time at Hogwarts even with them being in separate houses. The young brunette who had been there for her through all her struggles. The death of her father, the truth of her life, the loss of her love. She had been there through everything. Lisa Turpin was Sally-Anne Perks saving grace.

"Believe what Lise?"

Lisa tilted her head in slight confusion before smiling softly. "This is it Sal, we're graduating."

"Oh...." Sally-Anne looked back out across the grounds and sighed. "That." This place was her home. It had been for seven out of the eight years that she had been her and she tried so hard to forget that remaining year. Did she really want to leave? Could she leave?

Nudging her back to reality the Ravenclaw perched herself on the wall in front of her childhood friend. "Come on Sal, this day is supposed to be one of the best days of our lives. We're free. Going out into the real world as adults. Starting our careers, our families. Moving on."

Turning sharply at that last sentence, the young blonde stared at the intellectual in front of her for a moment before sighing once more. "I don't think I want to move on."

Turning away from the archway, she paced the tower she repeatedly found herself in when she wasn't in the best of moods. For some reason the height always made her feel slightly better. "It's easy for you Lise. You've got your whole life planned out. You're starting your internship at St Mungo's in a month for Godric sake. And what am I doing? Absolutely nothing."

Collapsing in on herself the blonde curled her arms around her legs in the middle of the floor. "I don't know what I want to do with my life."

Hurried footsteps entered her hearing as a soft palm placed itself on her shoulder. "Yes. You do."

Peering up at the brunette, she raised an eyebrow with confusion.

"What are you good at Sally?"

"Quidditch."

"Besides that Sally-Anne."

The blonde sighed and raised her head to an appropriate height. "Charms.

"Exactly."

"But..."

"No buts." The Ravenclaw rose to her feet and towered over here. "You are Sally-Anne Perks. Daughter of Charlotte and Matthew Perks, younger sister of Sebastian Perks. And you, Miss Sally-Anne Perks are a Charms Prodigy. The best to come through Hogwarts since Professor Flitwick himself. You know what you want to do Sal, you just won't admit it to yourself."

Smiling softly at the stern look at the older girl's, she nodded slightly. "You're right."

Lifting herself of the floor she grabbed her gown and her bag and crossed the room to the entrance of the Astronomy room before stopping and turning back to one of her favourite people. "I've got to go, I'll see you at the ceremony?"

"Go get 'em girl."

With that departing line Sally-Anne flew out of the room, avoiding trick steps, trying her best to not trip and fall flat on her face with the speed that she was running down the corridor. No matter how good at Quidditch she was Sally-Anne wasn't the most graceful person when her feet were on the ground.

Skidding to a halt outside the Charms classroom, she found Professor Flitwick packing away his desk for the year. Knocking softly, she watched as a soft smile graced the small teacher's face.

"Miss Perks, what can I do for you today? Shouldn't you be getting ready for the ceremony?"

The tall blonde picked nervously at her nails. Everything came down to this. She didn't know what else to do if this didn't work out. "Urm..." Come on Sally-Anne spit the bloody words out.

"Professor, do you need an assistant for next year?"

Dedicated to Charlotte Perks

MARCH.

Mother's day had always been one of her favourite days of the year. Her mother had spent her entire life trying to make sure she was happy and it was the one day of the year dedicated to showing Charlotte Perks just how special she was.

It had become even more important after Sally-Anne's father had died. And it was the one day a year that no matter what they were doing both Sally-Anne and Sebastian came home and spent the day with their mother. They spent the entire day together. Sebastian would make her breakfast before Sally-Anne arrived, she would make lunch and then together they would make dinner, always something different but always one of their mother's favourites.

Each Mother's Day had gotten easier as the years passed since their father died but the issue with Mother's Day as that it was a different date every year and this year it had fallen on her parents wedding anniversary. So this year they had planned something special.

Sally-Anne and Sebastian had been planning it for weeks, they would make the meal that their parents had on their first date, play the songs from their wedding and Sally-Anne had even thought of the perfect gift.

There was obviously the issue that it might upset their mother, but they risked it anyway and their plan had worked perfectly.

-------------

When Charlotte Perks entered her dining room that evening it was to a shocking sight, it had been decked out with purple satin strands that were hung around her wedding reception, black and white flowers all around the room and on the table, set out perfectly were simple chicken and mushroom pies and all the fixings that went a long with a roast dinner.

Her two children were sat at the table in the middle of a rapt discussion when her youngest looked up at her, a soft smile on her face. "So, what do you think, mum?" Her eldest just looked at her in silence waiting for the tears he had been expecting all day. Both of them looked nervous at the prospect.

Sitting her down in her spot, she reached a hand out to her daughter. "It's perfect sweetheart, but you and your brother didn't have to do all this."

Laughing softly the two young adults looked at each other before Sebastian spoke. "We love you mum, we just wanted to make sure this day wasn't a bad day for you." The young blonde nodded as her brother spoke and slid a wrapped package across the table.

"Happy Mother's Day, mum."

"Happy Anniversary, mum."

They waited in anticipation as their mother opened the gift and frowned slightly as a lone tear rolled down her cheek. "Mum?"

Standing up from the table, Charlotte placed the picture frame on the mantel and sat back in her seat before looking up at her two loving children. "Your father would be so proud of you two."

Smiling softly they all began to dig into their food. The present moving softly in the background. Sally-Anne looked up at the photo and smiled, the last family photo they had taken. Matthew and Charlotte's arms wrapped around each other as Sally-Anne jumped on Sebastian's back pushing him forward into the frame. They looked so happy, and they were. And eventually, maybe, they would be again.
