APRIL MARATHON: PROMPT EIGHT

southside princess. — Bella Thorne as Paige Townsen Gif Hunt

On her way to the dance studio, Mackenzie had decided to pull up outside of the local diner and get herself a coffee and maybe a muffin or a wrap to go with it. She’d been struggling a lot lately and had been falling into her old eating disorder habits, but that was not a path that she wanted to travel down again. She didn’t want to be admitted into hospital or have a breathing tube shoved into her stomach in order for her to be able to survive, so a muffin was a small step towards taking control of her life once again and a coffee? Decent coffee was the one thing she missed about New York! After finding a car park only a few feet away from the entrance to the diner, she shut the engine off and opened the door, slipping out and closing it behind her. Glancing up and down the street for a brief moment, she stepped onto the sidewalk and walked over towards the entrance to get her coffee.

After Mackenzie had stepped over the threshold and threw the door, she made her way into the diner and headed straight for the counter. She was running a little late so had decided that she would just grab a coffee and a blueberry muffin to take away and she’d eat it on the way to the studio. Placing her phone and keys down on the counter, she looked up at the menu and sank her teeth into her lower lip as she thought about her options. “Um, can I just grab a large latte with soy milk and a blueberry muffin? Oh, a chocolate chip muffin too, please,” she smiled, opening her wallet and pulling out her card. “Thank you,” she smiled, swiping the car and paying for her order. Once it had gone through, she turned her attention when she heard a familiar voice. Peyton. They had been friends since childhood, having been in the same year at school, but they hadn’t really spoken since Mackenzie had returned to Hartsville.

Moving to the side, Mackenzie smiled and moved over to hug Peyton and although she’d been about to speak, she
stopped in her tracks when she remembered her phone and her keys. She turned to move over and grab them from the counter but when she did, she noticed that they were gone. “Where’s my phone?!” she frowned.
“Has anyone seen my keys?” she added as she looked around, her hand moving across the counter as if they would suddenly appear when she felt for them. “What the hell. Did anyone hand in some keys? And a phone?” she questioned the barista who simply shook her head. Turning, she glanced around and arched a brow when she noticed Zoe. She was friends with her youngest sister and knew that she was a little bit light-fingered. “Zoe?” she questioned, moving towards the other female. “My phone and my keys. Now.”

Get High really wasn’t Mackenzie’s cup of tea. She was terrified of heights and had always preferred keeping two feet firmly on the ground, but her ego often got the best of her and when it came to other people, she very rarely ever said no. She didn’t want people to think she was a chicken or a wimp, so instead of being honest about her fears, she more often than not agreed, even if it made her extremely uncomfortable. She didn’t want to go, but when Everly had asked or more or less dragged the redhead Get High, she hadn’t wanted to back down. “Come on, Red. Don’t be a wimp,” the dark-haired female teased, causing Mackenzie to roll her dark brown hues. ”If you don’t stop I’m going to push you!” Kenzie warned, her lips curving into a small smirk. “Out of the helicopter!”

Getting out of the car, she glanced over at Everly for a moment. “If we die, I am going to come back just so I can bring you back and kill you again, got it?!” she chuckled as she closed the car door and locked the car, her teeth sinking into her lower lip gently as she looked over at the helicopter. She was scared and that much was obvious, but she was trying to keep calm and relaxed. She couldn’t back out now. “Okay, come on, E. Let’s go,” she muttered, walking around the car and grabbing hold of her best friend’s arm, pulling her along towards the helicopter, or what Kenzie referred to as the death trap. She didn’t understand how anyone could get a kick out of adventures like these, but she wasn’t one to back down either.

Making her way towards the helicopter pad with her best friend, the redhead quickly noticed that they weren’t alone. She recognized some of the people that were already there, although she didn’t know any of them that well; none besides her best friend anyway. Smiling, she offered a friendly wave as she moved past Asher and towards the helicopter. She guessed that was one of the perks of living in a small town. Everyone seemed to know everyone, even if you weren’t on a first-name basis. Sinking her teeth into her lower lip, Mackenzie took a deep breath and moved towards the helicopter instructor or pilot, she figured he was one of the two given that he had a clipboard and appeared to be inspecting the helicopter. “Sure you don’t want to back out?” Kenzie rolled her eyes when she heard her friend and smirked as she gave her a gentle nudge. “Not a chance.”

Black sunglasses covered the bags under her eyes as Mackenzie walked through the entrance and into Taco Express. The night before had been a night she wouldn’t forget in a hurry but now she was paying the price. She told herself that she was meant to have fun though. She was only 24 and had her life ahead of her; this was the time in her life when she was meant to be letting her hair down and having wild nights on the town, but given how much she’d thrown up when she’d walked through the doors of her house, she was sure that she’d expelled the entire contents of her stomach, including her stomach muscles! Shaking the thoughts from her head and the embarrassing memories from the night before, she made her way to the back of the queue and lined up, needing to get something into her body before she threw up again.

Biting down on the inside of her lower lip, she slowly removed her sunglasses as she looked up at the menu. She had no idea what she felt like eating but all she knew was that she felt like food. Nibbling down on her lower lip as the queue moved forward, Mackenzie slowly stepped forward, though when she saw a familiar face, she offered the female a small wave. She didn’t really know Kaseigh all that well, but she had seen her around town and they had similar friends - she was an acquaintance; someone that Mackenzie could smile at or wave when passing, but they very rarely spoke or had a real conversation. “Next please.” Kenzie was pulled from her own thoughts when she heard the girl behind the counter speak. “Oh sorry,” she mumbled as she moved up to the counter and sank her teeth into her lower lip gently as she decided on what it was that she wanted to order.

After receiving her food, she picked up the bag, and although she’d been planning to take it out, she made her way over to a table in the corner and took a seat, pulling her taco out of its paper bag and placing it on the table. After unwrapping it, she raised it to her mouth and took a generous bite of the hard and crunchy shell, though almost immediately dropped it on the table in front of her when she spotted some kind of bug crawling across it. Oh my god!” she screamed, slightly louder than she’d intended. “Is that a bug?” she shouted, pointing towards the four-legged thing crawling across the table in front of her. Or maybe it had six or eight legs. At that moment, it seemed irrelevant as she screamed again and moved back from where she’d been sitting. “Ew! Ew! Ew! Someone, please kill it!”

APRIL MARATHON: PROMPT SIX

The Campsite

“Did you hear that? What was it?” Mackenzie whispered as she glanced around, but all she could see was darkness. She hated camping and this was the exact reason! She wasn’t the kind of girl who got a kick out of sleeping under the stars or roasting marshmallows by the fire; she hated that kinda stuff, but yet here she was. Her sister had convinced her that going out with some friends would be a good distraction, but now the redhead was having serious doubts about it. Breathe and relax. She knew that she was probably just overreacting or worrying about nothing, but she could barely see a thing and couldn’t help but start to panic. Biting down on the corner of her mouth, the brunette turned and moved back into the tent, searching through her things for a flashlight. “Kenz.” Turning her attention to her sister, Mackenzie took the flashlight from her older sister and moved back towards the entrance of the tent, shining it out into the beyond.

As she shone the flashlight into the darkness, she felt a shiver run up her spine. She felt like she was being watched, but she couldn’t see anything at all. “Rox, there is something out there. I know there is.” Maybe this was why it was called Devil’s Tramping Ground, Mackenzie wasn’t sure, but she knew that she wished they were still back in Hartsville, even if it hadn’t always been smooth sailing. Hartsville certainly had its moments and had left Kenzie with a certain amount of PTSD, but at least she knew what she was getting herself into. “Wait, is that Jordan?!” she whispered, nudging Roxy as she waved the flashlight around. “Over there.” She could see a figure close by but couldn’t quite make out who it was. She didn’t know Jordan all that well, but she had seen him around town and knew him as her baby sister’s 10th grade English teacher, but she didn’t understand what he was doing or why he seemed to be creeping around the tramping ground.

Running her tongue along her lower lip, she raised the flashlight and hit the palm of her hand with it as the light seemed to flicker on and off for a moment. Turning to face Roxy, the redhead grabbed the blonde and pulled her from the tent, deciding to go and explore and find out exactly what it was that was hiding in the bushes. She didn’t really think it was Jordan, but it wasn’t as if he would have been the first serial killer that she’d come across - not that she thought he was like that at all. He was married to her friend, but maybe that was why Kenzie found herself needing to find answers. “Kenz, you’re worrying about nothing. It was probably just a wild animal or something.”

APRIL MARATHON: PROMPT FOUR

Easter Egg Hunt GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

Easter was Mackenzie’s favorite time of the year and it had been ever since she was a small child. She and her sisters had been raised in a very religious household, so that particular holiday held strong value within the Winter’s family. It represented the death of Jesus and him rising three days later. It wasn’t about chocolate or the easter bunny, not in her household, but what made it the redhead’s favorite time of the year was the fact that Easter Sunday was a day that her mother put aside to spend time with her three daughter’s. It didn’t matter where Amelia Winters was or what she was doing, Easter Sunday would always be a mother-daughter day and Mackenzie lived for it.  She could still hear her mother’s voice as she walked into the house where Kenzie lived with her grandparents and two sisters. “Are my girls ready?!” She’d always get so excited. No year was the same as the last and Mackenzie looked forward to it every single year. She hadn’t spent a day like that with her mother since she had run away at 18, leaving Hartsville and everyone in it behind her, but maybe it was time to make peace. It had been six years after all.

“Give me back my Easter eggs!” Mackenzie almost jumped out of her skin when she heard the small voice coming from behind her. She had been so lost in her own world that she hadn’t been paying any attention and had not realized that her sister’s daughter had been trying to keep her attention for the last fifty feet. “Please! Aunty Kenny!” Laughing softly, Mackenzie knelt down with the easter basket full of small easter eggs in hand. “Oh. You mean these easter eggs?” she questioned with a small smirk, moving them just out of reach as the four-year-old made a grab for the basket. “Gimmie!” The toddler screamed, causing Mackenzie to slowly get back on her feet and stand up straight. “And what’s the magic word, hmm?” she questioned. “Please..” she added, watching as her niece tried to jump for the basket. She was very determined - a clear Winter’s family trait, though she eventually gave up and pouted, folding her arms across her chest. “Please aunty??” she whined, holding her arms up for the basket. “Good girl,” she encouraged, holding out the basket of easter eggs for her. “Now, let’s go and see if we can find some more,” she whispered, taking the toddler’s hand to continue their Easter egg hunt around Prestw0od Lake.

Biting down on her lower lip gently, Mackenzie continued searching around the lake for easter eggs with the bouncing and very energetic toddler. This was a very different easter experience but one that she was happy to have become a tradition. She liked being able to spend time with her family and do normal easter activities. “Ready to go home now?” the redhead asked, biting down on the inside of her mouth gently as she watched the child grabbing a small pink easter egg from behind a tree. “Yes, yes, yes!” her niece replied, jumping up and down on the spot a couple of times as she shoved the easter egg into her already over-filling basket. “Wow. You have so many. Enough for Aunt M to have one or six, huh?” she asked with a small grin as she walked towards the toddler. “Let me help you with those,” she added, holding out her hand as she was handed the easter basket. Wrapping her hand around the handle, she turned her attention as she walked along the path so that they could head home, spotting a few familiar faces, she offered a small wave. “If you’re working tonight, I’ll see you later. I am coming to the restaurant for a drink. I need one or ten after this one has had me running around after her,” she smirked as she walked past Zachary, offering him a small wave before continuing the short walk back to her car.

APRIL MARATHON: PROMPT THREE

Bella thorne gif images on Favim.com

Things with Sarah seemed to be finally getting back on track. They’d been good friends once upon a time - no, they’d been like family. She had been her older sister’s best friend.. She had been her rock, she’d been like another sister to her, or at least that had been the case until Mackenzie had decided to sleep with her boyfriend. She’d only been 19 at the time and changed a lot since then, but still, she knew that she had hurt the other female a lot and had been trying to make up for that ever since the two of them had reconnected at the coffee shop. She wasn’t sure if they would be successful in rekindling their friendship, but she was hopeful! It wasn’t like she had an awful lot of female friends, preferring to stick to herself, so when Sarah had agreed to meet her for a girls’ day out, she had been more than happy about it.

Drinking, dancing, and a show. That seemed like the perfect way to spend a Sweet Saturday. Maybe even a few tasty treats from the bakery up the road too. Hearing her phone start to ring, Kenzie answered it and raised it to her ear, a warm smile spreading across her lips when she heard the other female’s voice. “Hey. I’ll be at Kraken & Grill in like, half an hour. See you then!” she stated as she hung up the phone and made her way over to her car. She opened the car door and slid into the driver’s seat, fastening her seatbelt before making her way towards the restaurant and bar. Reaching over, she turned the radio on and turned the music up. She wished that she was as talented as the voice on the radio; maybe then she wouldn’t have been stuck at a dead-end job working for tips as a bartender, but then again, maybe if she actually turned up to her shifts she wouldn’t have been.

Taking a deep breath, Kenzie shook her head and freed her mind of the million things that seemed to be flooding it as she made the short drive to the restaurant. She was starving, but mostly, she wanted a drink that she didn’t have to get herself and at a place where she didn’t work. Finding a park, she opened the door and grabbed her purse and phone, sending Sarah a quick text. “Hey. I’m here. How far are you?” Once she’d sent the message, she shut the car door and locked it before heading inside and making her way straight for the bar, glancing around as she weaved her way through the various people standing around, making sure that Sarah hadn’t already arrived. After perching herself upon the barstool, she leaned over and waved down the bartender. “Hey, can I just grab a glass of wine please?”

APRIL MARATHON: PROMPT TWO

The House ON Hill Street - ** Face Claim ** - Wattpad

#past drabble

2013

“I’ve already told you, Mackenzie. You are not going anywhere!” the older woman scolded the 16-year-old. Who did she think she was? She wasn’t her mother, she couldn’t tell her what to do or where to go and Kenzie reminded her of that often. Rolling her dark brown hues, she turned on her heels and stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind herself as she left her grandmother’s home and walked over to the awaiting car. “Hey, thanks for picking me up, Brody,” she mumbled as she opened the car door and slid into the backseat. She could see her grandmother out of the corner of her eye, running out of the house and waving a slipper as she protested her granddaughter leaving. “You are just like your mother!” she screamed as the car pulled out of the curb and headed down the road. She was used to her grandmother carrying on like that now, and so were all of Kenzie’s friends. Her grandmother always had something to scream about, but Kenzie let it roll off her back and tried not to let it bother her, though that was easier said than done.

Biting down on her lower lip, Mackenzie sunk into her seat and pulled her seatbelt over her slender frame as she pulled out her phone. Once she’d unlocked her phone, she searched for her girlfriend’s last message. “I need to see you.” She could feel the tear cascading down her cheek as she sent the message. Avery was her favorite person. She was the one person who Mackenzie knew that she could always talk to no matter what and in that moment, she was the only person that Kenzie wanted to be around. “Hey, Mac. Sure you don’t want to come to Joey’s party? It’s gonna be a real baller.” Glancing up from her phone, Mackenzie glanced over at her friends and shook her head. “Nah. I’m just gonna go for a walk. I need to go and clear my head,” she mumbled, shrugging her shoulders, but she knew that the boys would understand. They knew her grandmother, Brody having dated her older sister for over a year. “Call me if you need anything and I’ll come and pick you up.” Nodding, Kenzie gave the boys a little wave as he pulled over and opened the car door. “Thanks, B.”

After walking through town for ten minutes or so, Kenzie felt her phone vibrate in her pocket and pulled it out; smiling when she saw her girlfriend’s name pop up on her screen. “Hey, baby. Meet me at The Vault. I’ll be there in twenty. Love you xx.” It was amazing how one little text from Avery could make her feel so much better. She shoved her phone back into her pocket, knowing that Avery wouldn’t expect a text back - she’d been with Mackenzie long enough to know how she was and that she’d turn up. Running her hand through her hair slowly, she turned the corner and made the short walk to The Vault. It was their special place. It was where Mackenzie had first told Avery that she was in love with her. It was where they’d had their first real kiss so it was special to her. “A?” she called out as she walked through the entrance. She didn’t even know if the place had another name, but to her and Avery it was the vault. Maybe they’d named it that because of it’s shape, or because for the first months of their relationship (before Mackenzie had come out to her family), it was the place they’d escaped to in order to keep their secret. It was a vault, it was their vault.

“Hey red,” Avery grinned as she bounced around the corner and into Mackenzie’s embrace. As Mackenzie wrapped her arms around the blonde and placed a gentle kiss against her girlfriend’s soft lips, she felt a tear escape her eyelid and roll down her cheek. “Baby what’s wrong?” Mackenzie slowly pulled back and wiped her tear, biting down on the corner of her mouth. “I had a fight with gran,” she mused, shaking her head and walking over to sit down on the floor in the corner, shaking her head as her gaze moved from the floor to her girlfriend’s face. “I’m too much like my mother apparently. I’m too much of a handful.” Pulling her knees up to her chest, she wrapped her arms around her legs and tilted her head to the side. “Can we just stay here tonight?” Avery didn’t say a word but nodded, moving to sit down next to Mackenzie. “I love you, Blondie,” she whispered, moving her head to her girlfriend’s shoulders and closing her eyes.
