Silence: The Death of Tony Stark

"I Am Iron Man."

SNAP

*Four words that changed everything. In the blink of an eye, thousands of hostile forces were dusted away to nothing. The air grew still and an eerie empitness floated through the the dust that layered the earth. A figure in red and gold armor stumbled forward before leaning against a chunk of debris and dropping to the ground. Cold silence was broken only by the voice of Peter Parker.*

"Mr. Stark. Hey..... Mr. Stark, Can you hear me? We beat em'. We won..... Mr. Stark. We won Mr. Stark.... We won, you did it sir you did it.... I'm sorry. Don't....."

*The voice was broken, aching with the inevitable pain of loss. Peter knew Tony was dying in this moment, they all did. The silence was broken once more, and only once by Pepper, who allowed Tony the much needed rest the hero so desperately deserved.*

"Tony... we're gonna be ok. You can rest now."

*Chocolate colored orbs fell still, head tilting to the side as a final breathe was drawn and exhaled. There was no talking, no yelling, no arguments, not so much as a word muttered. The silence overtook the battlefield, one that would soon spread across the world and beyond. A sacrfice from a source least expected, this moment now frozen in time. The heroes stood there for many moments, before coming together to carry the body of Tony Stark away from the charred planet surrounding them.*

*The silence followed the heros back to Stark tower, where those who could not fight had been waiting. Avaren McCoy, a longtime SHIELD agent, had remained back with Morgan Stark, keeping a promise to Tony to look over the young girl. Avaren was certainly capable of battle, but she and Tony had an agreement to never fight together and risk Aria not having anyone to raise her if something went wrong. Tony had agreed to take in Aria if something ever happened to Avaren. So she stayed behind, watching over the girl who now slept peacefully as the night grew late. Nobody knew it would be her last peaceful night for a long time.*

*Brown hues lifted as Pepper walked into the lab, and she didn't have to inquire to know something was wrong. Following Pepper was Peter, Steve, Thor, Rhodes, and Clint. Where was Tony? The woman slowly stood, taking a few steps towards the group. Something was wrong, very wrong. Blood mixed with mud and dust was clearly seen on them, but it was the look on their faces that told the story she dreaded. Pained expressions told her of loss, one that had torn at their very hearts. Not Tony..... The agent thought to herself only a moment too soon as her eyes caught sight of Pepper. A simple shake of the womans head told Avaren all she needed to know.*

*Weakness overwhelmed her, and she did not even feel her knees buckle from under her. Clint quickly stepped forward, catching Avaren as she dropped to her knees, chocolate orbs filling with tears. Her eyes shut tightly and pale lips opened to cry out, but no sound came. The silence had followed them here too. Clint held her, trying to comfort the agent who had grown so close to Tony over the years. Almost 15 years of history together, they had become family. Avarens daughter Aria had looked up to him like an uncle. Now, just like that, he was gone. They all knew the risks, there was always a chance any one of them could have been killed during the time heist from a multitude of enemies. But it wasn't supposed to happen, not like this.*

"He saved us.... he saved everyone."

*A quiet whisper finally broken the silence as Clint spoke to her. Stark had sacrificed himself, an action so unexpecting for someone like him. Or perhaps it wasn't... He had grown so much over the years she had known him. The cocky big shot attitude and a disregard for the rules had slowly melted away as he grew into the man they all knew and loved today. A hero, now becoming a legend. The agent remained seated on her knees, her eyes opening once more as she lightly leaned her heavy head against her best friends chest. Those in the room remained quiet, some taking a seat on the couch, others gazing out the window. Pepper left the room to go find Morgan, and Avarens heart broke knowing the emotional heartbreak the woman was facing with her daughter.*

"I need you to promise to watch over Morgan. Make sure her and Pepper are ok."

*Tony's last conversation with Avaren echoed in her mind. She refused to allow him to think like that, but they both knew what could go wrong. Taking a long breathe, the agent slowly stood and nodded to Clint, letting him know she was ok. The weary woman turned and walked from the lab, appearing moments later at the door of the bedroom, brown hues catching sight of Pepper holding a crying Morgan in her arms. Even here the silence followed, the little girls tears unaccompanied by so much as a whimper. Avaren walked quietly into the room, sat on the bed next to Pepper, and wrapped her arms around both of them.*

And they grieved in silence.

The Avengers grieved in silence.

The world grieved in silence.

The Journal

Trigger Warning: Minor Child Abuse, Psychological Abuse.

Long black hair wrapped around the shoulders of a young girl as she wandered through the halls of HYDRA. There was a chill in the air, as was normal for a building located in the freezing cold Siberian hills. She enjoyed the cold and loved walking around the halls when the air was extra crisp. She passed by the lab and stopped, peeking her soft brown hues through the open door. It was quiet, as was expected for being late in the evening. She wondered if the frozen man was there tonight.*

*Sasha slipped into the lab, as she had done dozens on times before. She was intrigued by the man they would freeze in the tall metal chamber. She would visit him when her parents were away. He wasn’t ever awake, but she hated being in her room alone, and the other people at HYDRA weren’t always friendly. Her Papa always told her this place was to teach you how to fight, not to be friendly. She already knew how to fight, at least she was learning. Being indoctrinated into HYDRA was something all children of HYDRA families were expected to do.*

*The young girl walked up to the tank and placed a small hand on it, a soft sigh escaping her lips.*

“Мне жаль, что вы должны быть там одни. Я был бы твоим другом. У меня здесь нет друзей.”

//I am sorry you have to be alone in there. I would be your friend. I do not have any friends here.//

*Sasha stepped away from the tank and walked around her Uncles desk, sitting in the chair. She looks at some of the papers on the desk but they all looked boring. She opened a small drawer to find pens and other various supplies and papers. Sasha then turned a bit in the chair and opened a second drawer, her gaze catching sight of a pretty red journal with a black star on it. A tilt of her head portrayed her curiosity. She had seen her Uncle with this book before, and always wondered what it was for. A small hand reached down, wrapping thin fingers around the spine, pulling it up from the drawer it sought refuge in. She opened it towards the pages that were marked with a satin book marker, and found several words written nearly down the middle of the page.*

“Желание. Ржавый. Семнадцать. Рассвет. Печь. Девять.”

//Longing. Rusted. Seventeen. Daybreak. Furnace.//

*Sasha furrowed her brow just a bit. /What strange words Uncle Vasily../ She thought, before she felt the chair swing around and she faced one of the HYDRA leaders her Uncle worked with. Her eyes widened in surprise, the angry man snatching the book from her hand.*

“Что ты здесь делаешь, маленькая крыса !? Пошли!"

//What are you doing in here you little rat!? Let’s go!//

*The man barked before grabbing her arm tightly and dragging her from the chair. Sasha cried out in pain, trying to pull away from the man, but he was far too strong for the little seven year old. He took her down the hall and downstairs to one of the holding rooms. She hated these rooms, it was where people were sent when they did something wrong. Sasha tried again to pull away tears forming in her eyes.*

“Нет! Пожалуйста! Больше я этого не сделаю! Пожалуйста!”

//No! Please! I won't do it again! Please!//

*The man huffed and opened a door before pulling the girl inside and throwing her roughly to the cold concrete floor. A groan of pain escaped her lips as her arm scraped against the ground, her skin cutting open with an angry red patch. She looked up at the man and shook her head. The man turned and walked out the door, locking it behind him and turning out the light. The empty and windowless room was pitch black and she wrapped her arms around her knees, softly crying.*

“Papa....”

Flashback: October 1986

*Avaren sat at her desk late at night at the Avengers facility. Her mind had been restless and she decided to try and get through some old HYDRA files she had been researching. Things had lately gotten very out of hand, as HYDRA had discovered her true identity. Her connection to them and the life she was originally born into. Now HYDRA had a target on her back along with many others she cared for. HYDRA had been trying to get their hands on Avaren since. She was one of them... /no/. She /belonged/ to them. She flipped open a folder and saw a familiar picture gazing back at her. A cryotank encased around the one known as the Winter Solider. She lifted the photo up in her hand and a strange memory floated to the surface of her mind.*

----------------------------------------
October 1986

*Sasha watched from behind the desk as three men guided a fourth into a tall chamber. He had such a serious face and the young girl wondered if the man ever smiled. His long black hair feel just short of grazing against his shoulders, and a shiny metal arm was tainted only by splatters of blood. He was backed into the chamber and the cover closed over him. The girl had a perfect angle from behind the desk, and her eyes caught his own gaze. They stared at each other for several moments before cold air whipped around his body and he was frozen once more. A strong hand was felt on her shoulder and she gasped in surprise, only to turn and see her father standing over her.*

“Papa, mne ochen' zhal'. ya prosto khotel zeye.”

))Papa, I’m sorry, I just wanted to see.((

*The man gazed down at her and sighed.*

“Ty znayesh', moya dorogaya, tebe nel'zya zdes' nakhodit'sya. Eto nebezopasno”

))”You know you are not supposed to be in here my dear. It is not safe.”((

*Sasha had a disappointed look on her face, knowing she had upset her Papa. She stood and nodded but glanced once more at the frozen man.*

“Pochemu on dolzhen byt' tam? On vyglyadel ochen' grustnym.”

))”Why does he have to be in there? He looked very sad.”((

“Etot chelovek osobennyy, moya dorogaya. Kholod pomogayet yemu ostavat'sya v bezopasnosti i ostavat'sya sil'nym. Yesli my ne pozabotimsya o nem, yego razum poteryalsya by v proshlom, a eto bylo by ochen' opasno. Vy ponimayete?”

))”That man is very special my dear. The cold helps keep him safe and strong. If we do not take care of him, his mind would get lost in the past, and that would be very dangerous. Do you understand?”((

“Da Papa.”

))”Yes Papa”((

--------------------------------------------

*Avaren snapped back to reality, the photo still staring back at her. She sighed putting it back into the folder.* “Another lie Papa.” *Avaren said quietly, before continuing to move through other files.*

Things always go south Pt 1

-Avaren and Rogers wrapped up the briefing with Fury over what should be a easy in and out intel mission. Avaren insisted she could pull it off on her own, but Fury refused, wanting her to have backup in case it went south. “And things always go south.” He told them. He was right, even the simplest of missions can go wrong when least expected. Avaren stood and glanced to Rogers.- “I’m gonna go get ready. Meet in the garage in 20” she said before leaving the room.”

-20 minutes later, a distinct clicking of high heels walked up behind Rogers, who was already waiting in the garage. He would turn to find her in a sleeveless black dress, with a shimmering black sash around her mid-section and black heals, her hair down in waves around her shoulders. She had a somewhat annoyed look on her face, and before he could even say a word, she spoke up.-

“Two hours in this dang thing... that’s it. Then I want my pants back.”

-Avaren walked past him, and they both climbed into one of the low key non-marked vehicles they used for recon missions. Rogers drove while she reviewed the blue prints one more time.-

“Something seems off about these. There is this strange gap here on the east wall that isn’t matching up. Not very big, maybe a safe room of some sort. And I still feel like this office space seems to large..”

“Well we don’t need to go exploring, copy the data and get out, that’s the mission.”

“I know. I’ll get it done.”

-They pulled up to the mansion, and watched small groups of people making their way inside. There was a fundraising event this evening and their intel had determined that the recipient non-profit may actually be a Hydra shell company. They believed the host of the function was actually a Hydra cell leader. Rogers pulled up so the passenger side faced the house. The car was heavily tinted and this allowed him to remain hidden from prying eyes.-

“Good luck.” Rogers said before she nodded and handed him the small bag at her feet.-

“The charges are ready. Just set and release, 5 second timer,” she said, hoping they wouldn’t need them. If things went south, he would breach the east wall of the office and extract her.

-Avaren then opened her door and climbed out of the car. Rogers drove off, headed to ditch the car down the road and stage up against the east side of the home. Avaren took a breathe and made her way up the stone steps, nodding in greeting to those she passed. Once inside she focused on studying the faces around her, making sure to remember to smile and greet those she encountered, as to keep up appearances. She felt several men feeling her up with their eyes and already regretted agreeing to this ridiculous outfit. She spotted the target on the other side of the room, and a moment after he was approached by what looked like one of his guards. She moved discreetly down the side of the room, grabbing a small champagne glass from a passing server. As he stepped away from the room she carefully followed, setting down the glass on a nearby table. Whatever the guard told him had certainly gained his attention. He walked with purpose down the hall.-

“Target spotted,” she said quietly, her voice reaching Rogers own com with the update. Avaren made herself discreet. She watched the target use a keycard to swipe into the very room she needed to access. She reached into a small clutch she had brought with her and pulled out a phone. She remained around the corner from the room, keeping just the door in sight, while pretending she was talking a call to avoid distractions from those passing her. She saw the door open again, and she put the phone away. Glancing around the corner, then waiting for just the right moment, Avaren stepped out.-

“Oh!” She exclaimed softly, purposely running right into the man. Her hand slipped ever so slick in and out of the pocket on his suit jacket, grabbing the keycard she had watched him placed there moments before. Her had slid the card back against the inside of her wrist before she adjusted her clutch to hide it.-

“I’m so sorry. I was just looking for the bathroom, but I got a bit turned around here. It’s quite the lovely place you have.”

-The man paused and glanced at her, a sly smile crossing his lips.-

“Far lovelier with you in it my dear,” he stated, reaching up to tuck a lock of hair behind her ear. She tensed at his touch, but only just.. not enough to indicate anything was wrong. Avaren nodded slightly before speaking up.-

“Perhaps, maybe we could speak further after I freshen up,” she replied, wishing she could just punch him in the face. He hesitated but nodded. “Second door on the left,” he motioned, “Don’t be long,” he followed with a smirk. She turned and took off towards the bathroom, walked in and shut the door behind her.-

“If this mission goes sideways, I’ve got a bullet with his name on it,” Avaren stated to Rogers, quite annoyed by the situation. She waited a few minutes, cautiously peeking out into the hall a couple times and wait for a clearing to return to the office. When she found her moment, she slipped out of the restroom and moved quickly towards the door. Scanning the card, there was a soft beep and turned the handle and walked in.-

“Alright, I’m in the off.......”

-Avarens voice cut off as she turned and saw what was in front of her. The room was filled with shelves, computes, test tubes, samples, and three separate hospital type beds, complete with some kind of restraints. Hers eyes glanced around, and she quickly realized this was far worse than they were prepared for. Her gazed caught an elevator in the back of the room, the thing that explained the gap in the blueprints. Studying the numbers she just shook her head. She spoke to Rogers while walking towards a computer.-

“This isn’t an office, it’s a lab,” -She states while plugging in a small hard-drive she had in her clutch.- “And there’s 12 more floors below this. It’s not just the leader, it’s a whole Hydra cell...”

“Can you still get the data, or do you need extraction?” Rogers quickly replied, concerned about how quickly this could escalate with the new information.-

“No. I’ve got it, downloading now. Two minutes,” -Avaren said, a slight bit of concern in her voice, realizing two minutes was plenty of time for someone to walk through that door. A minute left. 30 seconds. She could hear talking in the hall “Come on come on,” she stated pointlessly as if her pleas would make the computer go any faster. Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five. Avaren glanced up as she heard the beep of the lock. Four, three, two, one. The door opened and three men walked in. Avaren pressed herself against the other side of a bookcase, hidden from view of the door. She very slowly slipped a small gun from a strap hidden under her dress, and used the same strap to secure the hard drive in place. She remained silent, waiting for an opportunity to sneak out and back to the rendezvous point. She lifted her hand and softly pressed a small button hidden under the skin behind her ear two times, a silent signal to Rogers that she was ok, but couldn’t talk.-

Aria and Jean- A glimpse into the past

-Stillness surrounded the trees around Aria. She sat on the ground, legs crossed and hands relaxed in her lap. Her eyes were closed and her body completely still. Around her were 10 stones, floating in mid air a foot off the ground. She had manage to hold the formation for an hour now, and felt her self starting to weaken, but her focus didn’t falter. Her weary mind started to become distracted with outside thoughts, which caused one of the stones to drop slightly for a moment before realigning with the others.

Jean appeared at the doorway of the small log cabin like home behind the young girl. She watched her for a moment in silence, admiring how far she had come, but also knowing how far is she had yet to go. It had been three years since Aria had come into her power and unfortunately it came in a catastrophic way. Aria’s mother had entrusted Jean and Charles to protect her and teach her to control her abilities.

Jean watched for a moment more before turning her focus to the energy within the stones. Aria began to feel resistance and felt them slowly pushing towards her. Her facial expression tensed to slightly and she increased her own force keeping the rocks steady. This went on for a couple of minutes before Aria let out a breath of air and open her eyes, the stones falling lifelessly to the ground. She turned to see Jean in the doorway with a small grin on her face.-

“You’re not helping...”

Arias stated, slowly getting up from the ground. Jean simply shook her head, and uncrossed her arms.-

“Oh but I was. You have to be able to learn how to defend yourself, even in a weakened state. Even when you have been pushing your abilities for a lengthy amount of time, you still have to be able to fight if the moment arose. You can’t expect your enemies to approach you when it’s convenient to you. While that would be ideal, you and I know better.”

-Aria sighed and shook her head, walking inside past Jean and sat down at a small table in the kitchen, Jean following behind her.-

“Well if your trying to train me to be stronger, you can’t keep holding back. You know I’m ready...”

-Aria said with a determined look on her face. Jean glanced over and smirked, before sending a book off the shelf behind her and into the back of her head, not hard, just enough to startle her.-

"OW!"

-Aria exclaimed, rubbing a hand on the back of her bruised head.. and ego.. She glared at Jean but didn’t say anything, she understood the point. She always had to be ready, even in the most casual of circumstances.-
