The view from the filthy, dust riddled glass of the front door painted the town in a dull and eerie calm. The occasional stray paper cup or plastic bag drifted by seemingly bat around by an unseen hand but otherwise it was a veritable ghost town. Dodge stood planted in front of the entrance, gently lifting one of the wooden slats of the blinds that hung down just above the door handle. He could hear her talking behind him, carrying on in a conversation that he merely caught bits and pieces of. The urge to tell her to "zip it" had perched on the tip of his tongue, but was quickly denied the moment the first walker came shambling into view. The inarticulate, undead corpse paid no mind to the bar nor did the plethora of others that quickly followed. Dodge swallowed hard, watching as the horde aimlessly crept to the north and away from the bar and the survivors within.

Once he was satisfied that the majority had tread far enough away that their voices would not catch attention Dodge removed his index finger from the upraised slat and sighed. A heavy palm maneuvered back and forth along his perspiring brow in silent contemplation before turning to face the young blonde.

"Ya know, I get it..." He paused, stretching a self soothing hand along the ache of his shoulder, back towards his neck. "You think you got something to prove. You a survivor, you don't need no one. You ain't afraid of nothin'." Leaving the look out of the front door, Dodge neared the bar quickly plucking up the bottle of water she had previously slid his way. "But that kind of c*ckiness..." A slight shake of his head followed furthered by a haunted smile as he split the seal on the water's cap. "That's what my pops called "a fools ego". He glanced up from the thousand yard stare, meeting her eyeline for a brief moment before flicking the dark hues skyward allowing himself to enjoy a much needed, wanted and delectably delicious mouthful of h2o.

Room temperature water had never tasted so crisp and refreshing. The water cascaded over his lips, dribbling down into the creases of his neck quickly pooling into a damp puddle upon the neckline of his t-shirt. He grunted barbarically, swiping the excess liquid away with a single swoop of the back of his hand.

"Everybody's afraid of somethin' darlin'."

With the open bottle dangling at his side, Dodge maneuvered past the young woman. "Ask any man that ever fought in a war, they tell you themselves, they was scared sh*tless 95% of the time." He paused just before disappearing past the entryway of the back room, glancing up humorously in her direction. "The other 5% of the time was for praying they'd make it back home to get laid one more time."

Once round the corner and out of sight, the only hints as to what Dodge was doing came from brief bumps and the occasional hollow thud. Several minutes later he emerged and sauntered towards one of the booth seats. Plucking down a bottle of Jim Beam upon the center of the oval faux wood countertop, Dodge slid into the booth, settling towards its rear in a frontal view the blonde.

"A good barkeep never drinks the profits, and damn near always has a personal stash." He gently kicked out a stray chair sat caddy corner to the booth's table. "Pull up a chair Goldilocks, and bring a couple shot glasses with ya."

He watched as she strode up ahead, Goldilocks as he dubbed her. She was sure of herself, which was good, and had lost her way from a group she was loyal to, which he was partially envious of, but loneliness was a fickle bitch. A mistress, he wondered, if she had been on her own long to completely understand. The hardships of the new world where difficult enough, but to truly understood the staunch ramifications of such isolation took time surviving alone, time that ripped one down to a raw nerve, dap danced on the psyche, and water boarded the soul.

She had fight in her. But not survivalist fight, but a need to prove she was anything but weak. The comment tossed over her shoulder in such nonchalance claiming he could essentially 'tag along', administered a casual grin to tug at his lips. A smirk further widened by her proclamation that she was in fact 'just as tough as he was'.

Dodge quickly realized the need to argue was mute and would gain no ground with the impetuous spitfire.

Instead he hitched the bags higher up upon his shoulders, maneuvering the belongings into a comfortable position before slowly following several steps behind.

The trek moved forward in relative silence. Goldilocks taking the lead, while he watched the rear. The brutal sun had begun to take it's toll on the nape of his neck and he stopped briefly calling out to her.

"Hold up a sec."

The bags dropped to Dodge's shins as he swiped the ever growing sweat and soon to be aching sunburn from the back of his neck. The break of asphalt and buildings could be seen through the tree line, the town was mere moments away allowing him the much needed break he was in desperate need of. Just as he hoisted the bags up upon his aching shoulders a crackle of leaves caught his attention. Dodge slid a machete from the holstered canvas, surveying the dense woods still strangling their backs holding himself at attention.

The decayed corpse of what had presumably been a male, with his tattered suit and torn tie came shuffling around the girth of a large oak tree. Dodge stepped forward, ready to bury the blade deep within it's cranium when several others quickly followed. Three more, six, more than he could count. He turned, yelling out to the blonde feet away.

"Run!"

A brief glance over his shoulder witnessed several shamblers tripping over each other in desperate want to feast on their flesh. The growl and desperate moan of the undead rattled the air. A psychological weapon amid their arsenal they never realized even existed. To them surviving was nothing more than eating and hunger.

Dodge broke free of the tree line seconds after Goldilocks, watching as her petite frame made a bee line to the first building available. A bar. An oblong red brick building with a dusty miller light sign hanging in the side window beckoning weary travelers to come in, take a load off and enjoy a cold one.

She rounded the corner out of sight for a brief moment before he too skidded around the brick building towards the front entrance.

Please be empty, please be empty, please be empty...

Dodge watched her with a mixture of surprise and slight envy.

The young woman he rescued appeared to be a blonde, beautiful damsel in distress. A situation which was surely a mere act, a ruse to rob and kill him of what he had or a young lady that was green as a four leaf clover. A mere private in a war of the dead vs the living.

But the cunning she showed in leaving a gruesome yet brilliant note for those she had been separated from, had him viewing her in a new found respect that he never expected.

Yet envy wasn't far behind, a feeling which was swiftly repressed, as she passionately talked of the group she had once ran with.

The world that lingered, the world decimated and overtaken by the dead and those that had no law to keep them civil or 'right' doing was not one of 'good people' who look out for one another.

Dodge could feel his cheeks being flushed red hot with anger, ready to argue the silly rose-tinted view just as he had before when she told him they were all infected but suddenly he realized, he himself had helped her in her time of need and had never once thought about what he would receive in return for his chivalrous deed of heroism.

If he himself had acted out of selflessness, what stopped others from doing the same?

"It is gettin' dark." Dodge suddenly spoke up, rubbin' his head in questionable proposition.

"If i'm remembering right, there's a small town jus' up ahead." He paused resting his hands upon his thighs for a brief moment, breathing deep.

"Gal like you ain't safe once the dark hits, from walkers or people." He looked over catching her eyeline before swiftly looking out towards the tree line.

"I could walk ya to the town. Maybe find some supplies, a place to bunk for the night and you could continue searchin' come mornin'." He paused, perking a brow in her direction.

"Whaddaya say Goldilocks?"

Jan 4th 2015 - 6:13 PM

Dodge watched her closely, never underestimating any move, not even the simplistic swiping away of soft tendrils of hair that had fallen into her eyeline.

He listened tentatively, keeping distance between them even as she stepped away taking a seat amid a downed tree trunk.

Part of his rational thinking mind wanted to dismiss her claims, cut her off as she spoke, stop her before allowing any further utterance to spill from her lips yet another part of him stood stoic and still. Deep thoughts dove into memories of the things he had witnessed, burnt into a part of him that would never forget such horrors. The attack at the diner for one. Days after escaping the hell that was the institution, Dodge encountered marauders at a nearby gas station. He took solace merely looking for water, perhaps a mere bit of nourishment, maybe even a place to sleep while the chaos outside died down a little but instead he ran into a trio of men that appeared on the hunt for anything they could get their hands on.

He backed down at first. After the ordeal of fleeing the institution, Dodge had no want for conflict and attempted to make this clear to the men.

'Don't want no trouble.' He extended calmly. 'I'll just be leavin' and find me some supplies somewhere else.'

But the adrenaline fueled good ol' boys had no intention of allowing Dodge to leave. The lawless state of the streets meant they didn't have to let him walk away and even though his death would serve no purpose, the fact that they could do so with no consequences was a power they were itchin' to partake in.

After a brutal scuffle, bruised ribs, and a forearm which burned from a grazed bullet, Dodge had slid a kitchen knife into ones neck, ones gut, and straight into the chest of the third. He piled the bodies behind the front doors before promptly passing out in the back due to exhaustion. The next day as he snuck out the back door of the establishment past small groups of walkers, Dodge had turned back only to see one of the country boys shambling out the back door after him. Amid the chaos and anarchy that had suddenly turned the world upside down, he was sure it was nothing more than his fragile mind playin' tricks on him. But it all suddenly made sense now. His mind reeled, questions flooding in waves which he turned to begin spouting out like an eager child asking 'why', but before a single word could form he suddenly stopped himself.

The petite blonde sat hunched over, arms folded over her knees, head bowed. Dodge spent a year institutionalized, watching out for himself and upon making it out had continued with the same self reliant path.

A heavy hand rubbed back and forth along his head, letting out a deep sigh as he walked over to his bag, fishing a bottle of water out of the side pocket. Parking himself on the trunk a few feet away from the young woman, Dodge extended the water bottle.

"You mentioned a group? Are they-", he paused attempting to handle the question delicately. "Did you get separated?"

Dec 26th 2014 - 10:42 PM

Dodge came to an abrupt halt, gently rubbing the sweat from his eyes down to his chin. Thoughts raced through his mind but none were solid enough to stick in a calm response to what she had said. A rumbling sigh rose from deep within his chest and out through parted lips. Thick fingers ran through his dark hairline several times, an unconscious habit, which he often did when aiming to keep his calm. His lips pursed in an un-amused smirk as he turned around to face the blonde.

"You really doin' this?" His unrelenting gaze bore into her eyes.

A light scoff escaped, dark strands of sweat soaked hair shaking in disbelief above his eyeline. Before she could attempt to speak, Dodge stepped forward aggressively.

"I just saved your life Goldilocks! You think I had to do that? You think I wanted to put my ass on the line for you?The world aint what it used to be and the days of men bein' chivalrous are long gone sweetheart. You should be thanking me right now."

The more he spoke, the angrier and more aggressive Dodge became. Unconsciously aware, he had begun circling her like a wild animal stalking its prey. The bags upon his shoulder were quickly shed in order to give him more movement and free him of the oppressive weight that suddenly felt like a constricting serpent.

"And not only did I save your life, I didn't do any of the vile sh*t damn near any man out in these woods would've done to a pretty young woman who was alone and on her own. You got damn lucky I was the one who found you. Guarantee you won't be so f***ing fortunate next time."

At some point during his speech he had stopped, leaving only inches between them. Dodge's breath heaved out of him like a freight train, gently swishing the pale of her bangs from side to side as he slowly came to realize just how angry and frustrated he'd become. He quickly took several steps back to wear he had shucked the belongings, never taking his wild glare off her.

"No one knows anything. We're all just stumbling through the dark like blind goddamn mice here hopin' we don't get eaten by the snakes some crazy f*** unleashed in the maze with us. Surviving. That's it, blondie. We don't get the luxury of answers."

After several quiet moments Dodge finally broke the stare, glancing downwards, rubbing his temples as if a throbbing headache were pounding upon his skull.

"Let's say it's true, for arguments sake, cause we both know you're full o' sh*t. Let's say, we're all infected."

Standing feet away, allowing a humorous smirk to tug at his lips nearly leaving him chuckling, Dodge c*cked his head slightly glancing over in her direction.

"If you have information like that, why the hell you out here with us grunts? Huh? Some government official felt you worthy enough to impart this wisdom to you but didn't give a sh*t enough to get you up outta here somewhere safe? Naw..." He shook his head unconvinced.

"Sorry sweetheart, I don't buy it."

Dodge paused momentarily to allow the woman to give recognition that she understood then carefully released the palm covering her mouth. While keeping one arm around her shoulders, he stealthily removed the strap of his bags and set his belongings upon the ground at their feet.

"Slow and quiet." He whispered amid her ear, heavy breath panting in short quick bursts. Slowly he marched himself and the young woman backwards towards the tree he had been previously perched behind before forcing her to a squatting position.

The forceful grip he had once used to restrain her eased but only slightly. He released the hold over her torso and around her shoulders but maintained a firm grip upon both of her forearms. A precaution in the event that she panicked and drew the rotters attention.

Two shambled past, then four and four gave way to at least six more. Dodge crouched at the base of the tree holding the young woman close, hearing her breath, feeling the soft tendrils of her hair brush past his face as the wind caught it just right. It was in that brief moment that he could almost imagine what it might be like to be free. He was forced into institutional living because of what fear, true fear and panic does to a man. Dodge couldn't remember anything. Not who he was, where'd he been, where he grew up, what he'd done. Dodge couldn't even remember his own mother. Every living entity has a mother. A being that loves unconditionally. Late at night, lying in his bed listening to the loonies wail in incoherent babble, that was the one thing that itched inside the deepest, darkest places of his mind. So far down and buried that the itch was unreachable and unable to be satiated. He often wondered why that alone didn't turn him into the crazy thing they perceived him as. Unfortunately escaping the facility with his life didn't equal freedom. Dodge had only traded one plane of purgatory for a far more vast plane of purgatory.

The small groups of dead mindlessly followed the others lead and continued past them with nothing but their guttural growls left in their wake. After several minutes Dodge's tense, aching muscles began to relax but just as the coast appeared clear, a straggler shuffled into view. He pulled the blonde closer, maneuvering her in front of him as he aligned their bodies behind the bulk of the tree's trunk. "Steady..." Dodge whispered.

The sound of rustling leaves grew closer, as did the low gnarl. One arm wrapped around the girl, while the other carefully reached behind him for the gun tucked within the back of his pant line. Delicate fingertips tapped the warm metal of the pistols handle waiting for the moment they were discovered. Suddenly an animal scurried through the brush of crisp leaves and broken sticks catching the meandering walkers full attention. The rotting corpse lurched forward, arms flailing wildly in a frenzied want to catch whatever living creature had aimed for escape.

Dodge sat silently with the blonde for several minutes, perhaps even half an hour before he relaxed his grip and eventually released the girl. He felt almost dazed, suppressing the rising feeling of panic that he had once again blacked out and perhaps done something unthinkable. But the young woman looked unscathed with the exception of nerves.

He rose to his feet, stepping away from the girl before stretching his leg muscles allowing them the opportunity to regain movement and shed the stiffness of being crouched for such a long period of time.

"I'm not gonna hurt ya." He tossed out, making his way over to where he had shed the bags.

"I wasn't even gonna help ya but..." He paused, planted just above the duffle.

"But it really don't matter does it.." Kneeling down he plucked the bags up by their straps and slung them upon his back. Dodge sighed gently, before throwing a glance over his shoulder towards the girl.

"I'm pretty sure there's a town close by. Keep to the woods 'til you get there and you should be alright."

With that Dodge turned back around, hitched up his packs and began moving forward towards the tree line which led to the road. He gave a comic salute, waving his hand behind him as he journeyed ahead.

"Don't get bit Goldilocks."

Dec 14th 2014 - 9:52 PM

Three days. It had been three days since he last ate anything substantial and his enraged stomach was beginning to throb in aching hunger. Dodge had been keeping to the woods, keeping his vantage point open, and out of sight of the main road hoping that he would eventually run into a small town or abandoned farm house but it had been nearly a week and the only thing he kept running into were small clusters of dead.

The mixture of the heat, hunger and lack of proper sleep had begun taking its toll and despite his desire to continue moving, his body threw in the towel as he nearly collapsed upon a tree stump. Beads of sweat poured down his brow into his eyes and down along the mantle of his chin. The ruck sack and duffle which had come to feel like they each weighed three hundred pounds were quickly slung of his shoulders, settling among the dirt next to him.

Dodge reached over pulling a bottle of water from the pack but sighed in discouragement as he swished the paltry remains around the bottles base. If he didn't find a town or house soon, it wouldn't just be hunger he'd be worrying about.

The shot of water he took merely left him craving more but it was something at least. It was in that quiet moment when the sound of shuffling leaves soberly caught his attention. The growling moans followed seconds later. Carefully Dodge rose to his feet, gently hoisting the bags up onto his shoulder and making his way through the woods towards a break in the tree line which opened up to the road. He could hear the footsteps, closer now, footsteps that turned into what sounded like running.

He swiftly took a crouched position behind the trunk of a particularly gurthy tree and watched silently as a blonde woman went tearing towards the tree line. Dodge looked over his shoulder poised to turn in the opposite direction and carefully make a quick but quiet exit but when he turned back in the woman's direction just in time to see her take a nasty spill onto the ground.

"Sh*t... Sh*t." He muttered, wiping pooling sweat from his brow. He couldn't get a visual on the walkers but the crackle and crunch of shuffling leaves told him they would be in eyesight any moment. "Can't believe I'm f***ing doing this..."

Dodge rose to his feet and made his way over to where the girl lay face down upon the ground. She hadn't been knocked cold but she was obviously stunned and he knew simply reaching out to help her up would either result in a stab wound or a bullet to the head, so he picked a happy medium that would work for them both.

Without hesitation Dodge scooped the woman up off the ground in a bear hug, pinning her arms at her sides while clamping a palm over her mouth to keep her quiet.

"Look here Goldilocks," He began, his sweat streaked face and stubble ridden chin pressed against her delicate cheek. "Once i'm sure your calm and you won't scream i'll put you down but if you make a noise, i'll drop your ass here and leave you to be walker chow." Unable to see her face, his grip tightened as he looked over her shoulder watching as two walkers shambled into view. "Nod your head if you understand."
