In short...
Austin is an Untriggered Werewolf, originally from New Orleans, but because his parents were murdered, he and his brother Stevie were adopted and moved to Florida. Austin travels from Florida in search for his brother Stevie whom he heard went to Mystic Falls and searching for Jules.
(Stevie was with Jules and Brady in search for Mason and was killed by Elijah in the Salvatore Boarding House. And Jules killed by Klaus in the ritual to release his hybrid curse) He finished his Highschool Diploma a year early and went into Medical School, taking up part of his residency and studies within Whitmore College and Mystic Falls Hospital. After spending time within Mystic Falls and unable to find his brother, he moved to New Orleans... as there was something calling him there...

The only other thing is... Austin is Naive and has no clue about anything supernatural. He knows of his temper... but because of his parents murder and his loner status... he has placed it down to his psychological state... not because in fact he is a werewolf at heart. just waiting for it to be triggered. So when eventually he will trigger his curse... it will be a huge shock.
