Jacob Dutton is a rancher running the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch in the early twentieth century.
Jacob and his wife Cara are part of the Dutton family. Jacob is the brother of James and Claire Dutton, who both set out on a northward journey in 1883, James with his wife Margaret, son John and daughter Elsa, Claire with her daughter Mary Abel. Claire, who was recently widowed after the passing of her husband Henry, and Mary Abel died before they were well on their way and Elsa passed away when the rest of the family arrived at their final destination. James and Margaret later had another son, Spencer.
