hope swan-jones. thirteen. listed as a missing child. adopted as a child. living in manhattan. hope swan-jones is the biological daughter of emma swan and killian jones. she was born with a crescent moon shaped birthmark on her right wrist. hope was raised by her parents right up until after regina's coronation as queen. a few days had passed since then when a new threat had come about. a man had appeared in storybrooke named moriarty, who sought the new savior being born to emma and killian. as hope slept that night, moriarty broke in and spirited her away without emma or killian ever knowing. unable to steal her power and growing frustrated, moriarty abandoned hope in new york where she was found by police and taken into foster care while being named morgan.
morgan was raised in manhattan, new york in the foster system. as a child, she prayed that she would be adopted by a loving couple, but as she grew older she became more cynical of ever being adopted. foster families always returned her after witnessing the strange things happening around her. they were understandably freaked out, and as morgan continued to go through the foster system, the families became worse. one day a couple came to see morgan wishing to adopt her. ethan kingsley and his wife emily seemed very nice. ethan was running for mayor, and knew that if he adopted a wayward teen it could win him the election. the two of them eventually adopted morgan and although she was happy at the time, morgan soon realized that she had made a terrible mistake in letting ethan adopt her.
ethan was not the kind man he portrayed himself to be. he was cold and abusive towards morgan, though his wife emily was extremely kind and seemed to love morgan, she too was abused by her husband. emily always tried to protect morgan from ethan's wrath, but only ended up getting hurt herself. ethan not only physically abused the two women, but emotionally, mentally and sexually as well. morgan was eight years old when ethan first sexually assaulted her, causing morgan to turn from a sweet little girl to one that acted cold towards anyone except emily.
a month before morgan's thirteenth birthday, ethan had threatened her with a gun in a drunken rage. emily managed to stop him and tell morgan to run. morgan ran out of the door and never looked back, knowing that emily had saved her life. morgan didn't know if emily even lived through the encounter. she ran and stole to survive before making her way to storybrooke, maine and ended up stealing from one of the stores there and getting caught. morgan was then arrested, she was bruised and bloodied with a severely broken arm from her beatings a few days prior. morgan refused to tell anyone her name until the sheriff came to speak with her.
