------------------------------------------------------------------------

After firing off the last text, Mia finally took a moment to stop pacing around her bedroom and letting her mind run wild with worst-case scenarios. Enough was enough and within a matter of minutes, she had a bag packed for Josephine and was dropping her off with Blair.

“YOU SAID WE WERE WATCHING MOANA WITH MICK AND PUA, MAMA! YOU LIED!” the little girl hissed, thrashing as she fought to pull away from her mother and run back to the car, away from Blair’s doorstep.

Shutting her eyes, Mia took in a deep breath and prayed for patience beyond any she'd ever reached as she fought to hold on to the last bit of sanity that held her together, the concern for Mick beginning to drift to fear with every second that ticked on without a word from him. None of that, however, could be shown to a five-year-old who just wanted the night she was promised.

“I know, baby.” she mutter, clearing her throat as she knelt down to let her palms run along with her daughter's arms. “I know what I promised but I need you to just -“ she paused, hanging her head for a second before she glanced back up at the big brown eyes that mirrored her own. “I need you to give me some time, okay? I just have to go get Mick. He got -“ she stopped, chewing relentlessly on the inside of her cheek. “He got lost, my girl, and I need to go get him. You would want me to come to get you if you got lost too, right?” she pleaded, hoping that somehow Josephine would grasp enough of what she said to let her go.

With a sniffly nod, the sleepy little girl rubbed away the tears she only used for dramatic effect and nodded her head. “Okay, mama. Bring Mick home.” she agreed before standing tall and marching into the home of Blair Lexington.

Back in her beetle, browns fluttered open, the hint of redness glossing over as tears threatened to show themselves. Biting down harder on her lip, she swallowed the lump in her throat and shook away the fear. He is fine and I will bring his drunk ass home, she told herself, repeatedly. She was going to find him and he was going to be fine and she was going to wring his neck because of it. With a slightly clearer head, she shifted her car into gear once more and made her way to the previous home of the Baker boys.

Bring Mick home.

When she arrived, all hope left her body as she held on tighter to the steering wheel, her knuckles boring bone white, the sight of his car in the driveway sending a chill down her spine. Whatever he was doing in there, it wasn’t healing. It wasn’t good

Unable to allow herself the time to even turn off her car, Mia launched herself out of the vehicle and ran at full speed towards the front door. Her knocks were wild, slamming her fist frantically against the front door until it was riddled with crimson spots from bloodied knuckles. “MICK! MICK! OPEN THE DOOR, PLEASE. I KNOW YOU’RE HERE!” she called, banging harder and harder as she began to finally cry, her screams melting into the sounds of her feet now flying at the door. When he didn’t answer, she dropped to her knees, pleading to herself as she searched desperately for the spare keys somewhere in the area. Locating a pair he left in a potted plant, she pushed to her feet and attempted to fight the violent shaking of her hands long enough to open the door. The seconds felt like painful, burning hours but by the grace of a higher power, she managed to unlock the door and send it flying as she ran inside.

He was the first thing she saw, lying lifeless on the couch before her gaze dragged along the floor, spotting the empty pill bottle and it was as if she was being punched in the gut. Every breath left her body and the cry that left her small frame was guttural and shrill. She didn’t see the man she loved, so full of life and strength. She couldn’t find any hint or memory of the smirk he often wore - no, he was replaced by someone she didn’t recognize, pale and fragile and the image would be burned into her memory for the rest of her life.

Without another thought, she was climbing over him, nudging herself between him and the couch as she attempted to force him onto his side. “Mick, b-baby, please.” she breathed desperately, struggling to move his weight. “Wake up! WAKE UP! WAKE UP!” she continued, every syllable growing more hysterical, as she somehow managed to roll him over so he didn’t choke, her free hand reaching for the phone he kept in his pocket to dial 911.

With nothing left to do but to wait, she rocked with him, wrapping around him from behind as she cried into his back, palms shifting between trying to shove her fingers down his throat, to brushing his face as she begged for him to come back to her. “Mick, pleeeeasssse, I can’t -“ she attempted, unraveling around his lifeless body as she continued to tighten herself around him, “I can’t live without you. PLEASE! I love you. I love you. Come back, baby, please. Don’t leave me. You can’t leave me.
